Antarctic ice shelf could crack, raise seas by feet within decade, scientists warn

An Antarctic ice shelf could crack and disintegrate within the next decade, allowing a Florida-sized glacier to slide into the ocean and raising sea levels by feet, scientists warned Wednesday.

A dramatic chain reaction in the ice could occur by 2031, starting with the Thwaites Glacier, said Erin Pettit, a professor at Oregon State University who studies glacier and ice sheet dynamics.

New research Pettit presented to a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in New Orleans suggests the final collapse of the ice shelf may occur "within as little as 5 years" and mark the beginning of the end of the Thwaites Glacier.

Thwaites is the “widest glacier in the world” and has “doubled its outflow speed within the last 30 years,” said Ted Scambos, a senior research scientist at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences and a contributor to the research.

All the water in the Thwaites Glacier would raise sea levels by 2 feet — but if its collapse triggers nearby glaciers to fall, the global sea level could rise by up to 10 feet, Scambos said.

A series of scientific studies of Thwaites in recent years has shown the enormous glacier is melting more quickly and in ways scientists never expected.

[[Yet Democrats FLOCK to crammed low coastal areas by the millions]]

I have a theory that because democrats do that, that they are causing the land to sink in those areas... so the sea isn’t rising, the land is sinking from the weight... pretty soon the whole United States might tip over

Or it could not.

Sadly for the lying alarmists, populations of polar bears actually Increased not decreased as they claimed they would. The facts once again proved them wrong.

There was a meme about it not long ago which was pretty funny, showing the numbers back when compared to todays numbers, wish I could remember how it went. The left looked like fools for running the commercials they did about the poor starving polar bear on a tiny iceberg

Could. Might. "If present trends continue..."

In any case, if this is happening, it's too late to do anything about it now.

This doesn’t make any sense. If a glacier can crack and fall into the ocean, that would mean it’s already in the water. Displacement has become another science that is verboten and ignored.

“Weren’t all the coastal cities supposed to be under feet and feet of water decades ago?”

There is always just ten years left...

I did a rough calculation Assuming all the oceans in the world = 147,197,952,00 square miles, it would take 12,949 cubic miles of water to raise the level 1 foot. All of that water would need to be above sea level today.

Every time I do the math, none of the prediction of 10’-30’ sea level rise make sense to me.

All scientist that make dramatic claims like this should be held to an accuracy standard. If their predictions are off by more that a reasonable amount, they should be stripped of credentials, future grant money revoked, spend grant money reimbursed, tenure revoked and fired from their jobs. They get paid huge sums of money to be correct. If they fail to be even close, they should be disposed of professionally and financially. Any other profession that has had complete misses like this would result in severe repercussions.

The Antarctic ice could break off. An asteroid could crash into the earth. Yellowstone could blow up. The poles could invert. California could experience the big quake and fall into the ocean. The ozone layer could disappear. One of our enemies could perpetrate a biological attack on the homeland.

Which of the above is most probable?.

Well, then, that means global elites like Al Gore will be selling their beach front properties any minute to buy future beach front properties just a little further inland...

“Weren’t all the coastal cities supposed to be under feet and feet of water decades ago????”

When global warming peaked out about 9,000 years ago, sea level was about 20 to 30 feet higher than today.

The ocean is, like, more than a thousand square meters.

Yea, something like 70% of the planet.

I don't know how people believe this crap.....

Somebody should tell Obama to get ready to roll up the carpets at his seaside mansion on Martha’s Vinyard. Heck even the Hampton will soon be flooded
