BOSTON (AP) — Soon after losing his trucking job amid the pandemic, Freddie Davis got another blow: His landlord in Miami was almost doubling the rent on his Miami apartment.
Davis girded for what he feared would come next. In September he was evicted — just over a month after a federal eviction moratorium ended. He’s now languishing in a hotel, aided by a nonprofit that helps homeless people.
The 51-year-old desperately wants to find a new apartment. But it’s proving impossible on his $1,000-a-month disability check.
“We live in America, and the thing is, people like me, we got to go to the street if we don’t have no other place to go because we can’t afford rent,” said Davis, who lost a leg to diabetes, suffers congestive heart failure and is recovering from multiple wounds on his other leg and foot. “I really can’t do nothing.”
The federal ban, along with a mix of state and federal moratoriums, is credited with keeping Davis and millions of others in their homes during the pandemic and preventing the spread of the coronavirus.

AP should pay the man’s rent. /s
As they SHOULD rise.....
I have a relative who said that for years their rent went up $5 a year but this time it is going up $34! It doesn’t sound like a lot but when a pattern like that is broken its a bad sign.
America is so cruel. I guess there’s no jobs in Florida.
Freddie’s in bad shape for 51. I’ll pray for him.
Good, would love to buy a 2nd home someplace warmer.
We are all missing something here and its not like we can trust the author to tell the truth or present both sides.
I have a coworker who owns a home in another city that he was renting out attempting to build wealth for his family. A modest home.
His tenant has not paid rent in over 18 months and the local government refuses to allow his eviction. He has little kids and has basically paid for this guy to live in a home he does not own. Guy was already on disability prior to Covid so if anything his income went up (he did not work) during Covid but he still refuses to pay rent.
Nothing he can do. This guy has stolen 2 grand from his family a month for 18 months. He wants to sell the house but cannot until the guy is evicted.
How in the hell is this legal or constitutional? He pays for it but the city (deep blue) in effect owns the home and dictates its usage.
“I have a relative who said that for years their rent went up $5 a year but this time it is going up $34!”
He/She is lucky. Rent has gone up for everyone an average of $300 a month in Central Florida. It spiked and stayed high in April for some weird reason.
It was crazy, normal April and then everyone decided to skyrocket rent prices at once.
“Just curious as to which it is: he lost his job or was disabled. I seem to be missing something here”
He lost his job to do his disability.
“Soon after losing his trucking job”
Freddie must have a drug problem. There are literally 250000 trucking jobs available in the country right now. Maybe more.
The only people leaving trucking jobs are because they are getting a SIGNING BONUS to take another higher paying trucking job.
One of my widowed and elderly neighbors depended on income from two rentals for her expenses. The scumbag tenants refused to move out so she could sell the properties.
Someone rendered the places unlivable, she refused to repair them due to a lack of income, and a call to the health department cleared out the tenants. The places were quickly sold as-is and the problem for my neighbor was resolved.
I don’t give a damn where the tenants went.
OK - chalk it up to a very poorly written article, I suppose.
No agency of the government has the right to impose a federal eviction moratorium. The attempt was illegal, invalid, and not binding.
The reason for the increase in rent IS the “moratorium.” Land owners realized they were targeted by the makers of the “moratorium” and raised rents to protect themselves against a government that is actively working to eliminate private property.
These properties as income assets should never have been obstructed.
I see what you did there.
LOL!!!

I’m with you. And these issues would seem to make it very difficult to be a truck driver:
“said Davis, who lost a leg to diabetes, suffers congestive heart failure and is recovering from multiple wounds on his other leg and foot.”
I can see how that is possible. My elderly snowbird parents quit going to the costal Tampa area a few years before Covid hit. The monthly rent went from ~$5K to ~$10K for gulf coast views almost overnight. You can buy a lot of masks for that in Illinois..
America is so cruel. I guess there’s no jobs in Florida.

Not many for a one legged man anyway.
And about to lose the other leg.
