It'd be inappropriate for them to return the prize. The prize is basically a prize for lying, or at least for ginning up the public over nothingburgers. It's not about being first to report truth or anything like that.

Look up Joseph Pulitzer (whom the prize is named after), yellow journalism, the USS Maine, and why we went to war with Spain. When the USS Main exploded off the coast of Spanish controlled Cuba, most people assumed it was a typical steamboat explosion, something steamboats were prone to do. But Pulitzer wrote day after day about "new revelations" and made the public believe Spain fired onto the Maine. It was his day's version of click-bait. Thus, the public demanded we go to war with Spain, thus we had the Spanish-American War. All because of a lying journalist.

So the Pulitzer Prize is basically a reward for best in BS.

Exactly. The prize is one of shame. Let them have it and relish it while the common man mocks it.
