Senator's aid request for tornado damage faces backlash

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul is facing criticism for requesting federal aid for his home state despite his long track record of opposing aid for other regions recovering from disasters.

Kentucky was one of several Midwestern states rocked by tornadoes over the weekend. The storms decimated large portions of towns, and as many as 70 people are believed to have been killed in Western Kentucky.

Paul shared a photo of a letter he sent to the Biden administration requesting "expeditious approval" of a request for federal aid made by Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear. Requests like these by senators in states affected by a natural disaster are quite common, but Paul is facing blowback because he has opposed federal disaster relief for several affected regions throughout his Senate career.

Paul is a deficit hawk, who has battled against hikes to the federal deficit to fund all sorts of legislation. His opposition to aid for states impacted by disaster has often been based in his belief that disaster expenses should be offset by cuts elsewhere in the federal budget.

But, since after all it’s only Kentucky.

Biden has already signed off on the Governor of Kentucky's request for a disaster declaration. Aid in already arriving in the impacted areas. I don't know if any of the other states have requested the same.

These actions come from the Governor. Senator doesn’t have jack squat to do with it.

Not like all the other good guys like Romney,Graham and Cristie

If I made it sound like I think Paul is the only hypocrite in the Senate then let me be clear. They're all hypocrites to one extent or another.

Slightly off topic but I keep reading reports indicating Kentucky is a Midwestern State.

No, it’s not.

Media geography fake news.

. Senator doesn’t have jack squat to do with it.

Paul reached out to Biden and asked him to escalate the disaster approval and aid arrival.

This time it’s different?

Rand Paul is really something else. Sometimes you like him, some times you don’t. He rarely sits on the fence.

But this time it’s different. I agree it is but he needs to make it clear.

No, it’s not.

As far as the media is concerned everything west of the East Coast and east of the West Coast is Midwest.

I need more information than I read about Paul and his stance. I suspect it has been taken out of context. He probably wanted cuts from a lot of worthless Federal Programs which I would approve of, there are too many that keep getting funding that are long out of date.

Look at Paul's record. In the case of every other disaster request he has demanded that any money appropriated be offset by cuts from other programs otherwise he would not vote for the relief package. And he has never voted for one. The question is will he make the same demand on any Kentucky relief and will he refuse to vote for it if his demands are not met?

RP has little sympathy to folks who build homes in flood zones and other areas which regularly flood due to “natural” disasters. Tornado’s touching down in KY is a bit of a different cut of cloth.

Context matters. Anything out of context can be insulted.

And if it’s legally available, those insisting on providing it can’t complain about anyone taking it.

You can if the one taking it has voted against aid for disaster relief for everyone else in the counrty.

So, if the bordering states of Indiana and Illinois are midwestern, what does that make Kentucky?

So Tennessee borders Kentucky. If Kentucky has to be Midwestern because it borders Illinois and Indiana, then Tennessee has to be Midwestern too. Oops, there goes Mississippi and Alabama.

Basically they have to draw the line somewhere. They chose the Ohio River as the divider between Midwest and South. Illinois and Indiana are on the North shore. Kentucky is on the South shore.

Then spin it as showing how right your position is.

Rand should spin it as “we want our money back that never should have left this state in the first place”. Not like tornado damage isn’t statistically predictable.

Issues like followed his father around. Fight like hell for your constituents, but vote no for others. That is the nature of politics.

That’s politics. Most people are too stupid to see the difference and Obama made nuance a dirty word.
