Senator's aid request for tornado damage faces backlash

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul is facing criticism for requesting federal aid for his home state despite his long track record of opposing aid for other regions recovering from disasters.

Kentucky was one of several Midwestern states rocked by tornadoes over the weekend. The storms decimated large portions of towns, and as many as 70 people are believed to have been killed in Western Kentucky.

Paul shared a photo of a letter he sent to the Biden administration requesting "expeditious approval" of a request for federal aid made by Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear. Requests like these by senators in states affected by a natural disaster are quite common, but Paul is facing blowback because he has opposed federal disaster relief for several affected regions throughout his Senate career.

Paul is a deficit hawk, who has battled against hikes to the federal deficit to fund all sorts of legislation. His opposition to aid for states impacted by disaster has often been based in his belief that disaster expenses should be offset by cuts elsewhere in the federal budget.

So I guess the question is whether Paul will demand offsetting cuts first to cover the disaster aid for Kentucky before he will vote for it?

Only in some instances.

Which is how it should be. The government - like families - should set aside rainy day funds for downturns and disasters.

Rand has never been against legitimate disaster relief.

Too often these days, though, states will demand emergency funding for even the slightest damage and use it to buttress the blue state’s looming debt.

Like Puerto Rico...

Asking for aid for a state that has virtually been bombed and faces a major crisis is much different than the Leftists & friends wanting money for their little pet projects to buy votes.

Paul should demand that money from the fake infrastructure bill be used to rebuild the damages caused by the tornadoes.

An entire city just got wiped off the map. Rebuilding it from scratch is easily going to cost $5 billion, and that's just Mayfield.

Friggin' Feds got money to piss away on electric vehicles and other Green crap, they can use the money passed to these affected areas.

The media is trash. Taking advantage of a disaster to attack a Senator that they don’t control.

That what kills me. Everytime there's a natural disaster, the states are always sitting there waiting for Federal approval, like baby birds with their beaks out for food.

Do away with FEMA and just let the states handle it.

Will he demand offsetting cuts now? Before he votes for aid? Or will hypocrisy win out?

When was the last disaster relief he voted for?

If the tornado damage had struck Washington, New York or Chicago I’d be a different story coming out of Washington... I’d be major disaster relief on its way immediately. But, since after all it’s only Kentucky. And, you know, those rednecks probably had it coming. Where the hell is Mitch the bitch??

Rand Paul has voted against just about every disaster relief package that has arrived in the Senate. But now that it's Kentucky then I guess it's different.

Will he refuse to vote for an aid package unless it is?

Rank hypocrisy by a Senator, especially a Republican Senator, is something the media is always going to jump on.
