The century-old “classic” tall gas pumps had glass globes on top to show indeed how much liquid they had and was being pumped.
The pumps used to ding every 10¢, later every 25¢, then they removed the ding feature altogether when everyone started to look around for the phone...
Wonder no more; you are being robbed. Ever notice how you don’t hear any gas coming out of the nozzle until the pump has already rung up 30 or 40 cents?
I’m getting up there too. I can recall seeing a working pump with the bottle at the top to fill and then let gravity drain into your vehicle. Granted, it was long past its shelf life but it was at the literal end of civilizations (bordering on a recognized primitive area) and we were scandalized that the gas was $0.50 a gallon there where in civilization it was selling for $0.31 per gallon at the time.
