The recent rise in flash mob retail thefts and violent crime has hit home on North Michigan Avenue and at other iconic Chicago destinations, deterring holiday shopping and tourism as the city tries to emerge from nearly two years of pandemic stasis.
From retailers and restaurants to hotels, businesses are beefing up security and seeking help from law enforcement as visitors stay away in droves, alarmed by the confluence of organized crime and seemingly random assaults plaguing even once “safe” locales like the Magnificent Mile.
“People are paying attention to this,” said Kimberly Bares, president and CEO of the Magnificent Mile Association, a private membership organization focused on promoting the shopping district along North Michigan Avenue. “If there is an incident or concern about an incident, people are choosing not to come downtown.”

Did they only just notice because it's the Christmas shopping season?
People don’t like crime? How odd
Crime? there is no crime.
The condition is acceptable African tribalism
Meanwhile in LA Loserville:
Los Angeles police are also warning residents of the continuing trend of follow-home robberies.
Suspects in follow-home robberies target victims in affluent areas of Los Angeles, follow them until they are in a remote area and rob them. The Los Angeles Police Department announced a “Follow Home Task Force” on Nov. 23 in response to the crimes.
Wife and I used to make a point of going up to shop and eat great food in Chicago around Christmas time, but no more, if they get the crime under control we’ll go back but it’s just not smart to put your self in a war zone for no good reason.
Renamed to the “Bloody Mile”.
example: Snitches get stitches.
Renamed to the “Bloody Mile”.Thank you. I am going to start slipping that into conversation, and see if it catches on.
Chicago voted for this, and I hope they continue to get it good and hard.
Urban America is unlivable. Rational, decent people are avoiding cities to the greatest extent possible.
I’ve been thinking of visiting some friends/relatives (living and dead) there over Christmas, weather permitting. The only way I can go now is to go up 294 and approach via the northwest O’Hare corridor, which will add time and expense to the trip. When I’ve visited over the last 20 years, I make a point to fill up at the Indiana border with gas and enough snacks to tide me over until I can get the heck out of there.
I’d say that about 3/5ths of the city is a “no-go” zone now. And that’s during the day.
Crime? - These young people just want stuff for Christmas - there is no Crime in that...
Sounds to me like all these Holiday Shoppers are Really Racist by not going to these areas, don’t they have any compassion for these yutes practicing thier profession? They need these Jobs, so hurry up and go shopping so they can get back to work robbin, rapin and killin.
The useful idiot democrat party voters getting what they voted for “nice and hard.”
Chicagoans just pucker up and take it like a grown up. You are the ones who keep reelecting your beloved Dumbocrap thieves and criminals back into power over and over again so stop with the whining already and enjoy the fruits of liberal leadership.
I have a suggestion, which some may think is too drastic.
I would like to see a ,”shoot to kill” policy against these looters. Let armed store owners, armed security, along with armed police, allowed to shoot to kill fleeing looters.
The criminal gangs might just think twice about doing what they do, if they feared getting shot. They have no fear of punishment of any kind right now.
But if they continue their feral behavior, then we cull the herd by taking some out if they continue their crimes.
In a rare attempt at honest reporting, the Trib article mentioned that the affects of this could linger for years even if the crime problem gets 100% solved tomorrow. Until this government-induced crime wave hit, people in Europe would still associate Chicago with Al Capone. That era had ended 80 years earlier.
At least the mob took great pains to ensure that “civilians” would never be involved in the violence and the mob had its own justice system for those who failed to uphold that. It was bad for business.
Mrs L and I used to stay at a pet friendly boutique hotel in the Loop. Lovely place. They held a wine and snack meet and greet for the guests and their dogs every evening at 5:00 PM.
We’d get the same room every year. It overlooks the Chicago River at Wabash and Wacker. A nice view and a short walk to all the sights.
We’d get a nice dinner on Christmas Eve and then stroll along Michigan Ave and State St to enjoy the displays. All told we’d drop $500-$600 dollars. Not a ton of money, to be sure. But not insignificant either.
Never again. And it’s all the fault of the voters of Chicago.
