Democrats want to ignore the Senate Parliamentarian… [Manchin vacillating]

— Joe Manchin said Thursday he will vote to uphold the Senate parliamentarian’s decision if she rules that immigration or other provisions should fall from Democrats’ huge social bill, underscoring the party’s uphill fight to keep some top priorities in the legislation.

Elizabeth MacDonough, the chamber’s nonpartisan rules referee, is expected to decide shortly whether language letting millions of migrants remain temporarily in the U.S. can stay in the 10-year, $2 trillion measure.

Asked Wednesday whether he would vote to override a decision by the parliamentarian to erase the immigration provision, Manchin told reporters he would not. “The bottom line is you stick with the parliamentarian, that’s all,” he said. “You stick on every issue. You can’t pick and choose.”

The House version of the bill would let an estimated 6.5 million illegals in the U.S. since at least 2010 seek work permits letting them hold jobs and avoid deportation for a total of up to 10 years.

Progressive and pro-immigration lawmakers and groups have been pressuring Democratic leaders to override MacDonough if she says the immigration language must be dropped, and to go even further and insert language giving migrants an opportunity for citizenship. It’s unclear what Democrats will do.

“I’d vote for that,” No. 2 Senate leader Durbin told reporters this week about overturning the parliamentarian if she rules against immigration. Durbin, his party’s vote counter, said such a vote would be “close.”

There could be other Democrats who’d vote to back the parliamentarian if she advised removing the immigration provisions. One is Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., another moderate, who’s said she supports helping migrants become citizens but has cited “legal limitations” in what can be included in this legislation.

MacDonough has ruled against two previous Democratic immigration proposals in recent weeks that would have each provided around 8 million with a chance to become legal permanent residents and possibly citizenship.

Asking for a friend, is it time to longer respect any law, court ruling, government policy which we do not agree with as the Libs are advocating and following? The respect for the law and regulations seems dead.

I hate the press!

Which bill?

There is the Infrastructure Bill, which I believe already passed (?), and the so-called Build Back Better.

Ther article does not name it, but calls it “the 10-year, $2 trillion measure”. Ok, seems there is a lot of those lately.

What is the NAME of the bill (and that is probably as obfuscating as the article)?

Any rules that inconvenience Democrats must be swept aside.

And this costs the U.S. $2 Trillion... why?

Of course the reason is we're paying them

I don’t think you know what vacillating means. Manchin clearly and unequivocally said he would uphold the parliamentarian’s ruling.

All aided and abetted by Mr. Mitch. He’s just another wolf pretending to be a sheep. I’ll always give him credit for standing strong on the Supreme Court pics of Trump but that was all he ever did well. Especially with all the Kavanaugh lies and nonsense.

You need to supply support for your position. It certainly wasn’t in the article.

What is more likely is that you didn’t understand that upholding the parliamentarian is the conservative principle here.

Article doesn’t say Manchin is vacillating, it says he’d support the parliamentarian. Why’d you change the title?

Joe Manchin plays this game over and over again. Just like Lucy with the football.

He plays this game to get whatever it is HE WANTS from either side.

He pretends to be a conservative for the Right and then votes for the Left.

If a bill is close, he waits until the Majority Whip calls and then makes a deal. If they have enough votes to pass with RINOs support he has no leverage.

He plays this game every time. Why GOPers ever put their ‘hopes’ in him is frustrating. When has he ever come through on something of importance?...................

Joe Manchin plays this game over and over again. . .

He has played a variety of games, including the one you describe. But what you've posted does not constitute evidence of that. If the Parliamentarian rules against the Dems and then he votes to override her, that would be--but we're not there. (As the market speculators say, "If you're early, you're still wrong.")

Joe Manchin is not some White Knight that will ride in to save the day at the last moment. At the end of the day he’s a Democrat Politician and he will vote accordingly. Why everybody seems to think he’s on our side is baffling..............

The only reason the filibuster is still there is Manchin and Sinema. That’s just a fact. The only reason we aren’t looking at a packed SCOTUS, PR and DC as States, and HR 1 being the law right now is because the filibuster is still there.

The truth is, you didn’t know that upholding the parliamentarian would mean that the immigration provisions are stripped from the bill. You skimmed the headline and the story and then posted in a knee jerk fashion without processing what you were reading.

There is no other rational explanation.

It’s easy to discern what happened. The OP didn’t understand the procedure and posted in a knee jerk fashion.

Manchin, if you vote to allow the Senate Parlimentarian to be overruled on this, you will have pulled a Harry Reid - changing a long-standing rule that protects the process from being too easily controlled by a small minority...and if you do that, you’ll open the door for a vicious backlash when the Republicans regain control. DON’T DO IT!!!
