DENVER (CBS4)– A new study finds violent crimes and property crimes are rising faster in Colorado than nationally. Common Sense Institute, a non-partisan research organization, says violent crime jumped 10% in the state last year, compared to 5% nationally, and property crime increased 8%, while it dropped 8% nationally.
The study puts the total cost of crime in Colorado at more than $27 billion in 2020.
“We are awash in a crime tsunami,” says former 18th Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler.
He and former Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrisey conducted the study that found crime has been on the rise in Colorado for the last 10 years. They say the murder rate is up 106%, rape up 9%, assault up 40%, and motor vehicle theft up 135%. Colorado, they say, had the highest motor vehicle theft rate in the country last year.
“I really think it’s a wake-up call to the citizens of Colorado. They should be putting pressure on the policymakers of this state to sit down and to evaluate what’s been going on over the last 10 years,” says Morrissey.

Factor in the Democrats, and no explanation is needed. #DemocratsAreDestroyingColorado
The publicly-funded mental health system in Colorado is a full-on joke, a cash cow for Democrats. If you want help for any sort of mental health issue, calling them even ONE TIME is a mistake.
Colorado is just slow in recognizing that no-one, anywhere is being punished for crimes?
“Forget about the politics. Let’s get the policy right.”
Translation: Please ignore the fact that Democrat policies have turned Colorado into a hotbed of crime while we keep doing more of what got us here.
Sweet Mary Jane what happened to Colorado?
Are they Rocky Mountain high?
We’re always at least two years behind all the other states. Even Nebraska.
Democrats happened.
“while it dropped 8% nationally.”
Property crime dropped nationally? What are these folk smoking.
Right. They know why it’s happening!
I really, really want to get out of here. “Stay and fight” - no, I would rather live to fight another day.
I live in a great part of the state, way west. The Front Range is the problem. Anywhere you can drive to from the Front Range for a day trip is now also having problems. Once you get away from the influence of the Front Range, Colorado gets good again.
I’ve lived here a long time. I’m just really, really over it. That’s good for you, right? You don’t have to worry about running into my negative a$$ while you’re out enjoying the state.
Couldn’t have ANYTHING to do with all the homeless dopers - they’re just livin their best life, after all....
It’s driven by the Mexican population. You aren’t allowed to say it, but it’s factual.
Thanks for that correction!
...Democrat policies have turned Colorado into a hotbed of crime ...

Doubting Democrats understand the cause and effect relationship you’re pointing out here.
Having lived in the state since 1969, this was easy to observe. I’ve commented elsewhere on this board that I have been a witness to the Catholic so-called church aiding/abetting illegal immigration and expecting the catholic membership to simply suck it up. The decisions about whether to help the illegals are made by church mucky-mucks and don’t involve loyal, lifelong catholics in the country being invaded, in this case the USA. I watched Dear Old Dad putting bills and checks into the collection plate every Sunday for years and years, and for this he and everyone like him were made into forced participants in the migrant invasion. (And I was told that a book I wanted that cost 50 cents was “too expensive” and that I would have to wait. I don’t doubt it was “too expensive” under the circumstances, and that M & P were having hard financial times - but the amount getting handed over to the catholics on a weekly basis was WAY more than 50 cents.)
Catholics aren’t the only religious organization involved in this; LDS is famous for it; Scientology’s human trafficking is legendary. Now our South-American-born “pope” is basically chortling with glee at the Europeans who are fuming mad at his church filling their towns and cities with moslems - especially at the ones who aren’t catholic and would have objected to the process, had they been made aware.
In the case of the catholics, the tithing church membership, many of whom have been catholic for MANY generations, are expected to put up with the knowledge that the church is planting criminals in their communities without even telling them about it.
And so is everybody else.
Everybody’s got to do what they’ve got to do. I left the Front Range when it went downhill like every other urbanized area. Don’t know where you live but hope you find a good spot that fits, as I have, be it in Colorado or elsewhere.
Stay out of the larger cities along the front range. Denver is a third world city now. I moved to a town of about 1500 this year. 9300 ft. altitude. Very quiet, if a bit cooler.
high crime rate is direct proportion to high usage of legal drugs.
Living close to Colorado & having been there for various reasons many times, I really don’t feel safe even crossing the state line any more. I think Colorado’s law just on marijuana(as a for-instance)has led to mere than normal legal & law enforcement problems in neighboring states. I will make every possible effort from now on not to go there.
