NC’s top court halts March primary due to remapping suits

North Carolina's highest court on Wednesday pushed back the March election primaries for legislative, congressional and judicial seats to give state courts time to review lawsuits claiming the Republican-controlled legislature illegally gerrymandered some districts.

The decision by the state Supreme Court comes after a state Court of Appeals panel initially blocked filing for legislative and congressional candidates on Monday, only to have the decision reversed when the full 15-member intermediate appeals court was asked to weigh in on the matter. Filing began Tuesday for those races instead.

Wednesday's order suspends all candidate filing in the state until the litigation is resolved and delays the March 8 primary for two months. The Supreme Court says three trial judges hearing a pair of lawsuits must rule by Jan. 11. The ruling will then likely be appealed.

The delay is being granted "in light of the great public interest" in the matter and "the need for urgency in reaching a final resolution ... at the earliest possible opportunity," the order reads.

Primary elections for the U.S. Senate seat of the retiring GOP Sen. Richard Burr and U.S. House, General Assembly and judicial seats, along with elections for other local posts, will now be held May 17, according to the order.

This was the purpose of the Census Bureau delaying the release of their figures until the new administration.

And the new administration delayed further, so that states had to delay their maps.

And now an election has been moved (to give the Establishment's preferred candidates i.e. McCrory, etc., more time).

Every Republican plan in every applicable state will be sued until it is overturned by some liberal judge and a partisan Democrat gerrymander is substituted. Every Democrat plan will stand, no matter how ridiculous (Maryland, Illinois and many more to come).

While some will tell us that redistricting is all rainbows and unicorns and Republicans will benefit greatly from it this time around, the real fact pretty much anywhere is that Republicans do not control the process (especially in the larger states) — Democrat judges and the hyperpartisan DOJ have the only real control.

Just once I would like a judge to throw one of these out and say Elections have consequences. You want favorable maps win elections.

“Just once I would like a judge to throw one of these out and say Elections have consequences.”

The next judge who overrules a Democrat-gerrymandered map will be the first one in U.S. history. Republican maps go down in unwarranted flames at practically every opportunity.

It’s amazing how only Democrat judges are the ones who get to hear these cases, but if that pattern was ever broken the Democrats would surely be given as many chances to appeal as necessary in order to get their desired result. Kind of like how Democrat-ordered recounts work — keep counting as many times as necessary and only stop once the numbers have been sufficiently rigged.
