Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) on Wednesday suggested that standard mouthwash could treat COVID-19, and criticized federal agencies for telling people to "do nothing."
"Standard gargle, mouthwash, has been proven to kill the coronavirus," Johnson said, according to The Washington Post. "If you get it, you may reduce viral replication. Why not try all these things?"
"It just boggles my mind that the NIH continues to tell people to do nothing," he added of the National Institutes of Health, in a recording posted online by Heartland Signal.
The mouthwash strategy has been refuted by both health experts and mouthwash brands themselves.
Listerine says on its website that it “is not intended to prevent or treat COVID-19 and should be used only as directed on the product label.”

So they use isopropyl alcohol to “disinfect” your skin before a jab. There’s a variety of chemicals in wipes claiming to “kill the COVID-19 virus.” But we choose to gargle with alcohol-based mouthwash, and we’re suddenly kook fringe right wingers?
Unless your mouthwash is 100% alcohol then yeah, pretty much.
Nobody, AFAIK, is claiming that mouthwash cures CoupFlu.
I wonder if this mad-on for mouthwash is really about testing. That the use of mouthwash can reduce the likelihood of a saliva test returning a positive result.
Maybe even a nasal swab test....
Toothpaste and mouthwash inactivate 99.9% of the virus that causes COVID-19
I love digging into the mindsets of people who not only dismiss something that does little harm but also continue the narrative that anyone actually doing that thing are somehow mentally unhinged.
If I use mouthwash, regardless if it confers any defense against COVID, am I still a moonbat for doing so?
Even the alcohol content in wipes is not 100%, but they protect us, eh?
Is it any less effective than the clot shot? Can I get myocarditis from listerine?
I’m pretty sure mouthwash is illegal in England.
How about nasal rinses? They’re actually studying the efficacy of nasal rinses in the prevention or reduction of COVID and its symptoms.

If the virus exists in the mucosa of our mouth and nose, does it not follow that regular rinsing of those areas with mouthwash or saltwater, respectively, would reduce the population of the virus in them?
At least he didn’t advocate mixing in thousands of covid patients with immune compromised residents of nursing homes, resulting in thousands of deaths. Don’t hear much in the “press” about this, do we??
Aside from dentistry, this is about testing, ain't it.
BTW, note the mention of aerosols, not droplets.
More proof, as if it were needed, that the mask requirement is BS and that they aren't masks, they're muzzles.
It depends on what you're using the mouthwash for. If it's just for the usual breath-freshening then no. If you are using it because you think it'll cure your Covid then 'moonbat' may be appropriate.
I heard this sort of a year ago or more. All that was claimed at the time was gargling reduced the chance of transmission through your mouth. For some reason they said Colgate Total mouthwash was the one to get. :)
We’re on the same page. :-)
Reads to me like Deep State’s having cows about folks figuring out ways to defeat the testing.
But, but, but... they said rinsing with povidone iodine was a kook fringe conspiracy theory! And they proceeded to take it off the shelves in all of my neighborhood pharmacies! That must mean it doesn’t work!
Something else we’re not hearing about: Nosocomial spread of the coof in hospitals and the possibility vaxxed employees have become superspreaders.
So doing something that does no harm to oneself while believing in a possible placebo effect makes someone a moonbat? Got it.
They don't want you to kill the virus they created. It was designed to make you and your family sick. Get a vaxx, in fact get a vaxx every 6-months. That's how you remain healthy.
Similarly, some doctors suggest using a hydrogen peroxide mouthwash to do the same inside the mouth.
