U.S.A. –-(AmmoLand.com)- Those who follow the debate on restoring Second Amendment rights have probably heard the other side proclaim some variant of:
“Most victims are murdered by people they know.”
The implication is defending yourself from a murderer is futile, because there is no point in trying to defend yourself from a person who is close to you.
This is a way of lying with statistics. The truth is far different.
In 2013, this correspondent published an essay on the Misleading Murderer that you Know. The numbers were from 2010. This update uses the latest numbers. They are from the FBI Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) for 2019.
The most accurate crime statistics involve homicides, particularly murders. The most easily solved homicides are murders of passion between intimates. The hardest homicides to solve are those where there is no connection between the murderer and the victim.
The largest category of victims in the FBI reports of victim relationships to their murderer is unknown. In 2019, those victims are 49% of the total. It is a huge number. Some of this is because FBI Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) are often filed before an investigation is complete. As murders of passion among intimates are the easiest to solve, this means a much higher percentage of strangers and acquaintances fall into the unknown category when the UCR report is filled out.
The clearance rate for murder in 2019 was 59%. This means 41% were not solved. About 84% of the murderers who are unknown by the time of the UCR report remain unknown. It is likely most of the 16% solved are not intimate partner murders. Those that are, are unlikely to have been living with their victim.

That’s not how it works on Columbo re-runs. It’s always someone connected to the victim. And Columbo always figures it out. So there. If you can’t trust Columbo, who’s left? Matlock?
Joe Kenda
I'm still trying to figure out why the cops can't shoot the gun out of the bad-guy's hand like the Lone Ranger always did.
2A was intended to protect us against the government, should it ever morph into a King and his powerless parliament. Of course, since we have such a “diverse” culture it is often necessary to protect yourself from that as well. As for murders, if you take out a handful of Democratic run cities America is so far down the list of murders per capita it barely has any.
And 50% are committed by less than 5% of the population - young black males.
Why don’t we eve hear that statistic? We always hear about ho ‘black incarceration rates’ are so high... well no one is MAKING THEM commit crimes.
Roy Rogers, too. And they both had smart horses that could do all sorts of tricks.
I like how they can give someone a karate chop to the back and knock someone out like a light.
Even a whack on the head wouldn’t knock someone completely out.
But the government has F-14s and nuclear bombs, both of which are totally effective against guerilla fighters.
“Update on the Misleading Murderer You Know Lie, Latest Data”
HUH?
Update on the Misleading, “Murderer You Know”, Lie. Latest Data
Your version is better.
My!
My!
My!
Anyway, Guns do not protect just from strangers. You can also protect yourself from the ones you know!
Especially if you know they are threat!
Figures Don’t Lie, but Liars Figure
Many ways to read this graph. (figure)
1. You could IGNORE the 49%, since they are “unknown.
That essentially DOUBLES all the others.
2. If you then add together all the rest except “stranger”, since all of the others are someone you sort of know, you get 80% (remember doubled) only 20% strangers (doubled).
Conversely, if you add together “unknown” and “stranger” you get like 60%. (I know, 59! You probably think $9.99 isn’t 10 bucks) and 40% you know.
“Immediate Family” I assume includes “husband/wife” (spouses). It shouldn’t. This should be it’s own category. (with common-law included (shaking up)).
“Boyfriend/Girlfriend” ONLY 5%?
The idea that it’s usually the husband/wife (PART OF 11%) or boyfriend/girlfriend (5%) is an obvious LIE!
An aside: Unless the perp confesses/implicates themselves or someone gives the police important evidence/lead, the police would never solve ANYTHING.
Boyfriend/girlfriend includes ex-boyfriend and ex-girlfriend.
So it is even worse than you understood it.
AZJeep has it correct. Some of the most important people to protect yourself from are people who have made it clear they want to harm you. Many of them are former husbands/wives or boyfriends/girlfriends.

I am looking at the actual numbers of identified husband/wife and boyfriend/girlfriend. I have not done the statistics, yet. They include divorced spouses and former boyfriend/girl friend.
All of the known cases combined come to a bit less than 9% in 2019. We do not know what percentage they may be in the unknown category.
Known combined cases for husbands/wives and boyfriends/girlfriends are 9% of all murders.
Mr Weingarten is true treasure.
