Is Florida COVID-free? Google seems to say so
American Thinker ^ | 12/08/21 | Andrew Thomas

I regularly look at the COVID data on Google Maps, which uses the New York Times as its data source. COVID cases on the map are expressed as number of daily cases per one hundred thousand people on a rolling seven-day average.

You can see the numbers for each country in the world, each state in the U.S., and each county within each state. They are all color-coded by levels of case density.

Today I saw something absolutely incredible, if it's accurate. Every county in the state of Florida shows zero current cases of COVID over the past seven days.

These numbers are rounded down if there are fewer than one case per 100,000 people, so if you zoom out to the entire state, it currently shows 3.1 cases per 100,000 and dropping. Still, this is by far the lowest number in the country at this point in time

VIA GOOGLE MAPS

Florida is the third most populous state in the country at 21.6 million residents. People are flooding in to move there from other states and countries. I see hundreds of new giant apartment mini-cities popping up in the Orlando area alone.

Tourism is the state's biggest industry, with over 31 million tourists visiting from around the world just in Q2 of 2021 alone.

Governor DeSantis and the Florida Legislature passed laws this year banning vaccine and mask mandates in the state.

Zero COVID in Florida, in spite of every supposed factor working against it? Will this last? This phenomenon should undergo intense study by the CDC and virologists around the world. It destroys every assumption made by the "experts" and politicians who "follow the science" concerning the pandemic.

This the biggest good-news story of the pandemic era, and it should be the top feature headline

The reason I posted this is not for anyone to dance a victory jig but to discover what Florida did right.

... or another explanation this could be seasonal in the sense that Florida had a Covid surge last Summer when the heat was unbearable and everyone was hidden inside buildings in air conditioned rooms. This is recipe for the virus to circulate quickly. Florida turned the corner when the weather became milder and everybody went outdoors.

We seem to be seeing the same phenomenon in the North now that the weather is turning very cold and everyone is huddled inside.

Or perhaps Gov. De Santis did something right, but I’d like to learn what it is.

Turn on the COVID-19 layer
You can view COVID-19 related information as a layer in Google Maps.

Open Google Maps.
At the top, tap Layers Layers and then COVID-19 info.
The COVID-19 layer displays the 7-day average for the number of new cases per 100,000 people. It also indicates whether cases are increasing or decreasing. The layer’s colors indicate:
Grey: Less than 1 case
Yellow: 1-10 cases
Orange: 10-20 cases
Dark orange: 20-30 cases
Red: 30-40 cases
Dark red: 40+ cases

Visitors from Europe and Canada will soon be pouring into Florida for the winter season. Just saying.

Screw that, Dance and shout this to the world

Yes, of course the "summer surge" was for the reasons you say, but the Left knew that as well and they still went ahead and lied and blamed Desantis at the time.

So eff 'em and use that creep Alinsky's own rules against them and hold them to their own standard.

If Desantis was a fault for the surge in summer than his great work is responsible for Florida being the lowest in the nation.

No they won’t, not with the egregious travel restrictions. As soon as Canadian or European authorities see that a plane full of tourists are coming back from Florida, they’ll detain every one of them.

I know several Canadians and a handful of Europeans, and they’re cowering in fear this winter. Perhaps the roads down here will be tolerable this season.

A lot of Canadians own or rent property in Florida. They couldn’t come down last year but will be here this season. The US-Canadian border has opened.

I do believe that the sunshine vitamin D-3 played a big role in it. I might be wrong, but I don’t think so

This is statistically amazing in my view because it isn’t a death rate, just an infection rate. Perhaps my math is off but this appears to show an infection rate of .000031

The death rate must be absurdly small making it more likely someone would die from an asteroid strike than the China Virus.

Florida just went through a massive wave of cases, so people who were going to get sick got sick. They have had more cases per capita than other large states like Texas, New York, and California. They are still at 1-2000 cases a day. Florida is doing fine, but not a special success story EXCEPT they are free and open.

Interesting. I had never played around with the maps covid layer - didn't really want to support all the hype. I've been trying to ignore covid and just live my life as normal.

Florida's numbers may bump back up, but if policies have created an environment where most people have already been exposed, the bump probably won't be too bad.

Of course, here's the thing to watch out for in the coming weeks. Because Florida's numbers have dipped so low, now any increase can be portrayed as a huge surge. Look for headlines like "Florida's covid cases surge 300% in one week!" Well yeah, if the base number is small, any increase is going to be a large percentage increase. So the leftists will use this success against them.

Florida is just a few months off of 400 people dying a day, and now have the 9th highest death rate of the all the states. The success today is a byproduct of their bad summer.

Of course you are assuming all the prior reported deaths as being the result of the China Virus are legitimate. I don’t believe for a moment that is true.

Why would Desantis put out fake numbers in Florida? Regardless, choose to disbelieve the numbers if you want, but if one wants to tout low numbers now, you can’t ignore high numbers three months ago.

They have had more cases per capita than other large states like Texas, New York, and California. They are still at 1-2000 cases a day. [More like 200/day.]

Wayne07, as a Florida Resident, I can say that we have lived through these highs & lows. As you said, there was an August weekly high of new cases at 152k and massive criticism of how bad Gov DeSantis was in not shutting down the state.

Now we are down to a weekly new case rate of 10.9k and have been steady over the past month. FYI: no where near daily 2k of cases. Now, those past critics, finding strict enforcement states with soaring case levels, change the arguments to COVID being cyclical. A slight case of moving goal posts!

As for our per capita case rate being higher than the other top 5 population states, Florida still has the highest 65+ population in the US and this is obviously the most vulnerable to COVID. Especially true for the number of senior group facilities in this state.

My stats are from Florida Health and are produced weekly. My *guess* about this 7 December? Possible combination of lag from 4 day Thanksgiving Holiday and usual winter residents from Canada & US North. Next weekly report is due for 10 December.

“Why would DeSantis put out fake numbers in Florida?”

I don’t believe he would. However the death numbers and the “cases” numbers don’t come from his office and are subject to what the Hospitals report. By that I mean there is a difference between dying from the virus and dying with the virus. Also the PCR test being used is (in)famous for the great number of false positives it returns due to an exceedingly high number of cycles used in the testing.

Not so long ago he fired someone in his Administration for reporting inaccurate numbers on the virus. She claimed he was telling her not to report the numbers she said were legitimate and it was shaping up to be a scandal until it suddenly disappeared as a story. It was soon after that the reported numbers in Fla began the sharp drop to where they are today.

Florida puts out a weekly update, but reports cases daily to the CDC.

Numbers in Florida have been 1-2k every day for last week (Sunday numbers are combined into Monday).
