Donald Trump took a swipe at President Biden’s handling of Vladimir Putin amid the Russian president’s buildup of troops at the Ukraine border, saying Putin “is not worried” by his predecessor after the chaotic US withdrawal from Afghanistan.
“Vladimir Putin looks at our pathetic surrender in Afghanistan, leaving behind dead Soldiers, American citizens, and $85 billion worth of Military equipment. He then looks at Biden. He is not worried!” Trump said in a statement through his Save America PAC just hours after Biden finished his video call with the Russian president.

This is about either forcing political changes on Kyiv (e.g. implementing the Minsk accords) and/or deterring NATO from further activities in the Black Sea and defense cooperation with Ukraine....possibly both.
That might explain why Russia conducted the buildup in the spring, and, after a summer in which the US/UK/Turkey continued delivering arms to Kyiv, the HMS Defender incident, NATO recon flights, and the Ukrainian TB2 strike in October, why Russia decided to push back now.
Russia is concerned with the “creeping” NATO defense cooperation with Kyiv. NATO membership is unlikely and TB2/Javelins aren’t a huge deal, but they want to draw a line here to prevent NATO from deploying missile defenses (Aegis onshore) or long-range missiles in Ukraine
I expect a crackdown on "white supremacist / insurrectionists" to follow.
Ukraine put their desire to join NATO into their Constitution. The arms will continue to flow and have been going in constantly, overtly and covertly.
Russia will get a bloody nose if they invade. Russia will win but at a much higher cost than they expect.
If Putin does not invade he looks weak.
If he invades, he looks like a rogue.
Lose/lose scenario that genius Putin created.
