A few dozen survivors of Pearl Harbor are expected to gather Tuesday at the site of the Japanese bombing 80 years ago to remember those killed in the attack that launched the U.S. into World War II.
Herb Elfring, 99, said he's glad to return to Pearl Harbor considering he almost didn't live through the aerial assault.
"It was just plain good to get back and be able to participate in the remembrance of the day," Elfring told reporters over the weekend.

Thanks are not Enough.
I worry that current and future generations will have a hard time remembering. If it isn’t posted on social media they will have no idea.
As much grief as I give Microsoft at least https://bing.com recognizes the important dates.
My Uncle survived Pearl Harbor. Best I can figure he served on the USS Chew which was a WWI Destroyer converted to Escort / Patrol Ship during WWII. He had just left the Ship for Shore time when the attach started. My Dad doesn’t recall if he made it back to the ship during the attack.
He saw enough battle that at some point he was sent State side with what we now call PTSD. He was restationed on the East Coast doing guard duty at a Navy shipyard. One of the ships being built at the time was an ammunition ship. I believe it was the USS Mount Hood. When it was completed and ready to be sent to the Pacific he requested to serve aboard that ship.
Back in the Pacific while the ship was loading munitions something went wrong and the ship blew up and no remains were found.
RIP. Your uncle was a patriot and a truly brave man.
I used the word "adapted" to describe survivors actions in combat, and your Uncle's experiences seem like he adapted so he could rejoin the fight.
My father was one of them but has been gone for many years.
How many are left?
