Oil CEOs clash with U.S. Energy Dept official over energy transition

HOUSTON, Dec 7 (Reuters) - Top energy executives this week urged a more cautious transition of energy policy away from oil and gas, but a U.S. Energy Department official said the industry has a moral obligation to address climate change and the economic opportunity it represents.

Executives from Saudi Aramco, Exxon Mobil and Chevron, speaking at the World Petroleum Congress in Houston on Monday, blamed demand for renewables and lack of investment in fossil fuels for recent fuel shortages and price volatility.

The verbal skirmish occurred at a time when oil demand has recovered sharply from a collapse during the coronavirus pandemic even as world governments have stressed the urgency of addressing climate change.

"The volatility in commodity prices and the impact on business and people," said Equinor ASA Chief Executive Anders Opedal, "illustrates the risks we face in an imbalanced transition."

U.S. deputy Energy secretary David Turk pushed back against the industry position, saying addressing climate cannot be put on the back burner.

"There is not an alternative to stepping up and fixing the threat to climate change," he said to an audience in a largely empty hall.

Amin Nasser, CEO of Saudi Aramco, the world's largest oil producer, said there are too many incorrect assumptions made about the pace at which consumers will shift to renewables from oil and gas.

People "assume that the right transition strategy is in place. It’s not," said Nasser. "Energy security, economic development and affordability are clearly not receiving enough attention."

And Tesla, the most likely chance to get to reduced oil consumption, is excommunicated from Washington. Nice job Brandon.

How are they going to build EVs without oil? Solar panels are still being made from oil too.

Fortunately, foreign oil production doesn’t cause CO2 emissions.

I have this fantasy where Trump, once reelected in '24, has a multi-day conference on climate change. He initially retains all these Biden appointees and has them speak on climate change, along with all the long-term establishment types. This will get their lunacy on the record. Trump then has an awards ceremony at the end of the conference. Each pro-climate change speaker is personally given a hideous plaque by Donald Trump, thanked for their service, and fired on the spot.

Joe Biden's edicts on climate, while demanding oil companies and OPEC members increase production reminds of the story of King Canute and the ocean tide:

King Canute set his throne by the seashore and commanded the incoming tide to halt and not wet his feet and robes. Yet "continuing to rise as usual [the tide] dashed over his feet and legs without respect to his royal person. Then the king leapt backwards, saying: 'Let all men know how empty and worthless is the power of kings, for there is none worthy of the name, but He whom heaven, earth, and sea obey by eternal laws.'" He then hung his gold crown on a crucifix, and never wore it again "to the honour of God the almighty King".

I had one of these nutso’s tell me about ten years back. “We’re going to make you live in caves and we’ll give you a candle if you are good.”

There is an even more basic question.

The production of Teslas is a form of heavy industry.

Will our windmills and solar panels provide enough energy to support the industry?

Those who put their faith in oil and gas will conquer and enslave the “wind and light” crowd on this planet.

I usually sent people the movie trailer for The Revenant (2015). It depicts life in 1820s America and this is how the Powers To Be want We The People to live.

Electronic grade silicon used in solar panels is made with electricity and acid. The older way from the 1800s used charcoal or coal but that doesn’t produce electronics grade silicon. Nether uses oil directly for electricity or the carbon source. The electricity for molten salt electrolysis can come from anywhere. In the aluminium industry who also does molten salt electrolysis uses hydropower almost exclusively for this because hydro is the cheapest bulk power on earth. China is the largest source of refined silicon they use three gorges dam power to do it. The world’s largest hydropower project by gigawatts
