Paris (AFP) – Covid treatments using plasma taken from the blood of recovered coronavirus patients should not be given to people with mild or moderate illness, the World Health Organization said Tuesday.
Convalescent plasma showed some early promise when given intravenously to people sick with Covid-19.
But in advice published in the British Medical Journal, the WHO now says that "current evidence shows that it does not improve survival nor reduce the need for mechanical ventilation, and it is costly and time-consuming to administer".
It made a "strong recommendation" against the use of blood plasma in people who do not have serious Covid-19 symptoms and said that even for patients with severe and critical illness, the treatment should only be given as part of a clinical trial.
The WHO said its latest recommendations were based on evidence from 16 trials involving 16,236 patients with non-severe, severe, and critical Covid-19 infection.

Of course they do.
Convalescent plasma is no where near as good as monoclonals. Why bother with this when we have a much better therapy?
The word "freedom" comes to mind.
The worldwide health organizations sure do love their ventilators.
Or availability? Haven’t the leftists been trying to hinder the availability of the monoclonals for the unvaccinated? Heck, I bet some COVID pro-vaxx Freepers support that position.
If WHO says no, that means we say YES.
Perhaps cuz they know the Red Cross and other orgs recently announced they no longer accept plasma from the vaxxed? Embarrassing.
P2 advises against WHO....
Do you have that dog’s number? :)
Someone I know just received the monoclonals at a clinic in Texas. They are working well. The interesting thing was the clinic told them to pass the word to others suffering from covid to come to the clinic. Apparently they are in danger of losing their financial support because not enough people are aware they can go there.
lol
Convalescent plasma is not standardized and the amount of antibody in a unit (454 mL) varies from zero to a lot.
Much safer to give standardized monoclonal antibody.
We have given and continue to give MAB and we are more likely to use it for unvaccinated people.
I agree, I am free to prescribe what I think is best, so I would not give convalescent plasma, but will give monoclonals.
I personally know of five people to get the monoclonal treatment. One unvaccinated and four vaccinated.
Not only that, but if you take a known exposure (close family contact, ie), then you can now get monoclonals prophylaxis — it is good for 90 days, and far better than anything else.
I knew they’d announced that, early on....then, scrubbed. When did they announce, again??
TIA.
We are running >100/month.
Usually we take them as they come so it would be rare to have two equally suitable patients, one vaccinated and one not, with only one dose to give.
However, I regard worsening COVID in an unvaccinated person as an emergency and will always suggest MAB for that person, while I'm more likely to wait it out in a vaccinated person.
