Tipping point was long ago. The real question is how it ends.

climate change, pandemics, or other challenges to the survival of our society

It's a bad test because these are fake "challenges to the survival of our society." What might happen in the face of a real challenge is uncertain.

We haven’t been able to come together over 30 years on China, although it’s never been a secret that the country has been ruled over by an undemocratic government which doesn’t recognize the civil rights of the people. Ordinary Democrats especially (even among the most educated) haven’t paid any attention over all that time to China being a threat to human rights worldwide. The educated ones especially shouldn’t have needed anyone to tell them that. And even out of pure self-interest, if they don’t care about the Chinese people not having a free society with free elections, they might at least see that the rest of the wealthy world merging with China would sooner or later threaten their own rights and freedom.

Bork.

I've thought a LOT over the years about where the "tipping point" came.... I think, THIS was it.

As luck would have it, I was IN the Senate gallery in 1987 when Ted Kennedy gave his "Bork's America" speech.

I didn't FULLY appreciate it at the time... but, I KNEW it was a significant moment in history.

...when an outside threat—like war or a pandemic—fails to unite the group, the divide may be irreversible through democratic means... the model identifies such atypical behavior among the political elite as a powerful symptom of dangerously high levels of polarization... "If we reach that point, we cannot unite even in the face of war, climate change, pandemics, or other challenges to the survival of our society."
IOW, partisan fake research pushing for an end to Constitutional government and the Bill of Rights.
