In early October, Gov. Gavin Newsom triumphantly announced that California would become the first state in the nation to mandate the COVID-19 vaccine for children attending school, once the Food and Drug Administration fully approves the shot for the 5-11 and 12-16 age groups.
Two months later, no states have followed Newsom's lead — not even states that have been similarly aggressive in implementing COVID-19 restrictions, such as Washington, New York, Oregon and Hawaii.
Why is that? Dr. Elena Conis, a historian of medicine and public health at UC Berkeley, believes that California's breakneck pace can be attributed to momentum on childhood vaccinations that predates the pandemic.
"Before COVID, California switched from being one of the states with the nation's most lenient childhood mandatory vaccination laws to one of the states with the strictest," she said.
Because the state had already recently tightened the screws on childhood vaccination laws with minimal backlash, Conis believes that state health officials felt comfortable moving forward with the first-in-the-nation mandate. As for why other states have yet to follow suit, Conis is less sure.
Dr. Amy Beck, an expert in pediatrics at UCSF, noted that California's mandate is only a "plan to make a plan," as it will not take effect until full FDA approval is given.
Given the squishiness of the plan, Beck hypothesized the mandate may be more about politics than anything.

Has Governor Newsome gotten his own children vaccinated yet? Probably not, else it would be in the news. Seems California continues with dictatorial rulers preferring ‘do as we say, not as we do’ leadership. I wish I could say that no other state is as stupid, but we’ve got a lot of the same BS here in neighboring Nevada and appears New York and elsewhere. Payback will be elections next fall.

It’s because California wallows in delusion and corruption. Public teachers unions ginned up hysteria over children and adolescents as an excuse to get paid while staying at home. Much of the population is thoroughly partisan and willfully brainwashed. They now really believe that children and adolescents are in terrible danger from the disease, or from spreading it. They could care less about results in Florida, Texas, etc., that prove otherwise.
