Not a chance.

I remember this election well. I even voted for Dole but in '96, there just wasn't a sense that the country was on the wrong track. Gingrich's congress had tempered Clinton's lefty ambitions, forcing him to the center where he governed very effectively. His worst scandals were still ahead of him. The economy was doing pretty well, having not yet experienced the "great sucking sound" that NAFTA would soon bring. The internet was starting to enter into people's homes and lives, bringing with it a sense of optimism at the potentials of the future.

Even at the time, people didn't really think Dole had a shot and that he got the nomination only because he was the "elder statesmen" and was due to at least hold that honor. In 96, nobody thought Clinton would lose and Perot wasn't even a factor.

You can believe whatever you want ...

Clinton won 49.2% of the popular vote, while Dole won 40.7% and Perot won 8.4%.
