Finding Purpose in Life

Twenty years ago in the summer, I traveled to Guatemala with my Nazarene Church to build church structures in some remote areas of the country. We would stay in small towns at the local hotels, if you could call them that. Early one morning, I was up early and went for a walk as the sun was coming up. The neighborhood was poor with small homes, many in disrepair with few amenities, if any at all. There was water and sewer, but the area was not well maintained.

There was almost no one up at the time in the small town, but as I walked, I came upon an elderly man tending to some weeds growing between the narrow sidewalk and the curb of the street. I guessed that he was probably late seventies or eighties. He was short, as most Guatemalans are, probably five feet, three inches tall and of slight build.

What struck me was the way he was dressed. He wore a long-sleeve shirt, the button-up kind with cuffs, and a collar, pants of the same off-white or tan color, boots almost knee-high, with his trouser legs tucked in them. He had on a leather apron that started at his chest and ran almost to his knees and a straw wide-brimmed hat. Gloves were on his hands. My recollection is that he had two tools with him: a hoe, which he was using, and a rake nearby.

The man's leather apron reminded me of a farrier's or blacksmith's apron. I assumed that he had done something else for a living but could no longer meet the physical requirements of that job in his prior life.

Thanks for posting Kaslin. Some days I feel like a fish in a tree myself and this article makes me realize I have some thinking to do.

"He expressed to me that he wanted to see if I had any ideas for him as to what he would do with the rest of his life."

Middle Age crisis: easily solved.

I’m going to be doing what older people had traditionally done in retirement: watching my grandkids.

That’s a wonderful gif, and I’m glad I saw it. And if you turned her loose on an old man, his life expectancy would be reduced to a matter of days. Maybe minutes.

We are all on this earth to do something. For some people it’s robbing banks or looting stores. My purpose is to not run into them.

Nope, Your life span can be lengthened . There is an energy exchange.

But its not a Western approach, although back in the early 20th century, it was copmmon for older men to take young women as brides. There are many reasons for that, but one was the fact that a younger woman can allow her energy to nurture a man and prolong his life through sexual exchange.

You can read about some of it here:

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/what-is-tantric-sex

And one does not have to be married to find such exchange. Unfortunately often wives do not want to bother with you after the age of 60, and so many older men are forced to seek the energy exchange elsewhere. This is not always the ase , one can experience that with a willing wife who understands.(That’s why we have the stereotype of “dirty old men,” which I find personally offensive.)

Anyway, good luck.

The worst way to figue out what to do in life once you’re retired and have time in your hands is to constantly think about it.

Just relax, be bored. Out of boredom some interest will eventually grab you and that’s what you will do. It’s not an intellectual exercise.

Let life come to you rather chasing things you think you want.

......several years ago, having been very busy all my life but seeing down the road to the day when I wouldn’t be, I started a “project”.

That project was to go down the Yukon River by myself all the way to the Pacific and then back to the Dalton Highway Bridge where I could put my boat back on a trailer and come home. So far, I’ve made it about 900 miles from Whitehorse in The Yukon Territory downriver to Ft. Yukon in Alaska.

It would take a War and Peace length book to tell the story of the several trips but one story is that I determined to get a new boat equipped the way I need it for the remainder of the trip down the Yukon. No such boat exists so I am building it myself in my back yard. Just in the past two months I have gone to Florida and back to pick up LARGE component parts and then also to Virginia to do the same.

So, the project keeps this old man busy for years running with no end in sight. I think I would be an unhappy camper without the “project” as there is always “something” interesting to do.

Sounds like you found your purpose in your life. It’s what you enjoy and find satisfying. That’s great.

I never looked at retirement as sitting home watching TV or playing golf everyday or just doing nothing.

I never liked the word retirement. For me it’s an opportunity to start new adventures and ventures... Or not. It’s all about having the freedom and time to do what you enjoy - provided you saved a little nest egg.

I remember when commuting to and from work thinking about what I wanted to do in life.

It seemed like most of the answers I came up with just didn’t seem very satisfying in the long run. I discovered what my problem was. I was limiting my possibilities and trying to be too specific.

Then one day I finally let go of those limits and arrived at what I wanted to do in life.

Here’s the answer I came up with. “I want to do whatever the hell I feel like doing at the moment.” Which sounded very irresponsible.

But you would only do irresponsible things if you learned nothing in your previous 65 years in the school of hard knocks.

So I asked myself, how do I go about getting to that point. Well the answer is control over your time and enough money to live on. And actually it all boils down to the latter - you can buy time with money.

And so I set myself out to save and invest to get there. And by the time “retirement” age came around (actually 12 years before), I was at a point to declare my freedom.

And now I am RESPONSIBLY doing whatever the hell I feel like, within reason of course.

I’m basically the same as you. Meaning, I practice every day maintaining my “mental health” and part of doing that is not putting pressure on myself to do anything I don’t “really” want to do. AND, Basically, if I can’t control it, I don’t worry about it!!!

And, your dead on about the Money!

There were a couple of old guys I knew who used to get on the commuter bus to the city now and then.

But—they had no real jobs in the city.

They were faking it!

Or—maybe they were confused and thought they really were commuting to their old jobs.

Everything is not always what it appears to be.

;-)
