Parag Agrawal, who was appointed this week as Twitter's CEO, has joined at least a dozen other Indian-born techies in the corner offices of the world's most influential Silicon Valley companies.
Microsoft's Satya Nadella, Alphabet's Sundar Pichai, and the top bosses of IBM, Adobe, Palo Alto Networks, VMWare and Vimeo are all of Indian descent.
Indian-origin people account for just about 1% of the US population and 6% of Silicon Valley's workforce - and yet are disproportionately represented in the top brass. Why?
"No other nation in the world 'trains' so many citizens in such a gladiatorial manner as India does," says R Gopalakrishnan, former executive director of Tata Sons and co-author of The Made in India Manager.
"From birth certificates to death certificates, from school admissions to getting jobs, from infrastructural inadequacies to insufficient capacities," growing up in India equips Indians to be "natural managers," he adds, quoting the famous Indian corporate strategist C K Prahalad.
The competition and chaos, in other words, makes them adaptable problem-solvers - and, he adds, the fact that they often prioritise the professional over the personal helps in an American office culture of overwork.

According to a dear friend of mine in IT, that is the behavior of hires from India and China who were hired LONG AGO.
The present day hires are NOT AT ALL LIKE THAT.
Furthermore, they tend to be lazy, and want to go back to their home countries for weeks at a time.
At one meeting, a supervisor suggested that if IT could get along well without them for weeks at a time, their value was questionable. My thoughts...a good point.

I agree with you. My comments were directed to how American colleges of engineering are becomming more woke and how foreign students thant enroll in engineering programs in the US are better prepared as freshmen than most American students.

You may be assuming that the point is to improve the lives of those at the bottom or of everyone. If the point is to make sure that the people at the top stay at the top, then maybe the Indians are doing a very good job.

I don’t disagree, but that’s only one side of the equation. Americans also need to pick up their game as well.
Any group that chooses to promote itself benefits thereby. If the left-handers at your company feel that left handers are more deserving and so select left handers for their teams, put right handers in spots where they won’t earn kudos, hire left handers nearly exclusively, and communicate regularly using left-handedism (obviously here real left handers don’t have a language right handers don’t commonly speak) then they have a bit of an advantage going up the chain.
For a more obvious example, how did it come to be that radical leftists now infest the top positions in academia, even though their ideas are destructive to any definition of logical thinking?

Most Indians in the US are from the upper casts, which have high IQ’s, comparable to Ashkenazi Jews.
That is most likely the best explanation for their success.
For decades the American public and corporations have been enamored with sports. Just look at the local news from Podunk Philadelphia; many announcements of full scholarships for kids who can hit ,catch,kick, or throw a ball but how many pictures of brilliant engineering students?
And don’t forget the too-common American disdain for “bookworms” and “nerds”. If a society shuns true science it will have fewer true scientists.
The bring their caste system with them when they come here.
I see it at my office. They discriminate against themselves depending on which of the 4 caste you are from.
