ROCHESTER HILLS, MI — After briefly being the subject of a $10,000 manhunt, the parents of a teen who allegedly perpetrated a mass shooting at Oxford High School have been arraigned on criminal charges.
James R. Crumbley, 45, and Jennifer L. Crumbley, 43, on the morning of Saturday, Dec. 4, appeared before Oakland County District Judge Julie A. Nicholson for arraignment on four counts of involuntary manslaughter. The charge is a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison and a $7,500 fine.

That’s fair.
They took off and through their lawyer alerted authorities they fled for their safety.
That home could have burned to the ground with them in it.
Can you imagine if your child did this? Took one of your guns and did this?
I’m just not into this parental prosecution until I see more of a negligent link. Guns in the house? NO.
We all have them under the couch, by the door, in the nightstand. Without easy access, self-defense guns are rendered meaningless.
If the parents were blindsided, this is prosecutorial overreach.
Need to see more. Parents should hire Rittenhouse’s defense team.
Hiding was a bad idea.
Hiding poorly was a big mistake
If the parents were blindsided, this is prosecutorial overreach.
I’ll wait for the trial. Or a helluva lot more info.
You are right.
That’s a problem.
2nd high publicity trial I can remember, Kyle’s being the first, that the gun hasn’t been the main culprit.
These worthless POS news & commentary sites are all the same...
Wait for the details to come out. Getting help for a troubled teenaged boy is very difficult in this country. What many need is hospitalization and long-term therapy. What they get are drugs prescribed that often make them worse, and suicidal. These parents are being strung up for political gain.
Anyone remember that Black kid that shot up the school in Texas? How fast did that vanish from the news?
“ There have been 48 shootings so far this year on K-12 campuses, 32 of which occurred since Aug. 1” How many ON campuses by students against students during school? Many occur at night between criminals, e.g., drug deals.
Honestly, I don't care about the kid, or if he can be "rehabilitated". The fiend should just be put down.
Agree that there’s unanswered questions here. However, they should have gone straight to the police station if they feared for their lives.
So far I think they were in total panic and they cracked. I do agree that merely owning firearms is not something they should be charged for. I don’t see that as a reasonable construction of the case.
But they screwed up big time by running. I think its completely believable that they did so over threats and in panic, but this was a huge mistake.
I think that there’s a good *civil* case against these people for negligence, just as if their kid ran over someone with their car.
But *criminal* liability for involuntary manslaughter? I’m not seeing it. The idea of involuntary manslaughter is that the accused’s conduct was so egregiously reckless that they knew or should have known the likelihood that their conduct would cause someone to die.
The parents should have taken him home after they saw the notes? Perhaps, but what about the school officials who saw the notes and allowed him to stay? Ultimately, the school made that call, not the parents who weren’t in a position to force the school to allow their kid to stay.
Seems to me that this case boils down to whether merely letting a teen use or have access to firearms is tantamount to recklessness per se. I’m sure that the left would like it to be so, but I think that most Americans would reject that on 2nd amendment grounds.
Hiding well means a life worse than jail. It’s very hard to hide these days without undergoing serious deprivation. They should have stayed in the open and claimed innocence from the beginning. That was their best chance. Perhaps a plea deal down the line. Now they have much bigger problems than they had when they decided to run.
People have got to wait for the facts. We learned from Rittenhouse that listening to the words of a prosecutor can be very misleading. Words from CNN are always misleading.
Prosecutors should not take a wide open case before the news. It reeks.
True.
When I was 16 in drivers training, the instructor said if you see the lights behind you pull over and take your medicine.
Remarkably poignant advice. Has stood the test of time.
The parents were fully aware the kid had problems, yet after he acts on his impulses their reaction is to bail, grab $4K from the ATM and head to a hideout. Both have had criminal charges in the past, they should know better.
And after a teacher saw the kid searching for information about ammunition the mother’s text to him was ““LOL I’m not mad at you,” Jennifer Crumbley texted her son. “You have to learn not to get caught.”
Parents of the year. Now the whole family is in jail, probably a good thing.
