Austria sees 2nd chancellor step down in less than 2 months: Alexander Schallenberg, who became chancellor in October, will stay on until party names new leader

Austrian Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg announced Thursday he is stepping down just two months after taking over from predecessor Sebastian Kurz, who stumbled over corruption allegations.

Schallenberg, a former foreign minister, said he would leave office as soon as the conservative Austrian People's Party names a new leader. Kurz was the party's longtime leader, and some had speculated he might return as chancellor.

But Kurz said Thursday morning that he was quitting politics entirely to spend more time with his family.

Schallenberg took office in October following Kurz's resignation as chancellor. Austrian prosecutors had announced that Kurz was one of the targets of an investigation into suspected bribery and breach of trust. The Greens, the junior coalition partners in Kurz's government, demanded his replacement.

Kurz and his close associates are accused of trying to secure his rise to the leadership of his party and the country with the help of manipulated polls and friendly media reports financed with public money. He became the leader of his Austrian People's Party and then chancellor in 2017.

Kurz said Thursday that he had always done his best to "move our beautiful Austria a little bit in the right direction," but acknowledged having made some mistakes during his 10-year career.

Still, Kurz insisted: "I'm neither a saint, nor a criminal."

"I'm a human being with strengths and weaknesses," he told reporters in Vienna, adding that he looked forward to defending himself against the corruption allegations in court.

After resigning as chancellor, Kurz became the Austrian People's Party's parliamentary leader. The position afforded him immunity from prosecution until it was lifted last month.

Austrian media reported that Interior Minister Karl Nehammer could replace Kurz as the head of the Austrian People's Party and then also succeed Schallenberg as chancellor.

Honestly, you’d think they would retire that term “Chancellor” when referring to their Fuhrer.

“quitting politics entirely to spend more time with his family.”

Yeah, sure.

Ol' Adolph was appointed "Reichskanzler" (and "Reichspräsident") by Hindenburg, but Hitler later belittled the term (in private).

I’ve always heard him called the Chancellor. Is that not correct? Or was it like some leaders with numerous official titles?

This is a strange article. The headline is about Schallenberg’s resignation. It goes into great detail about Kurz’s problems, but never mentions why Schallenberg is resigning. Was he an interim?

I repeat: Ol' Adolph was appointed "Reichskanzler" (and "Reichspräsident") by Hindenburg. He assumed those offices on Jan. 31, 1933. Those were his official titles.

Of course, he also gained numerous other titles (many of them purely ceremonial) and positions.

But privately, Hitler despised his official titles of "Reichskanzler" and "Reichspräsident."

He did, after all, view himself as selected by Providence to save the German people. As Führer, he claimed to enjoy a mystical relationship with the German people. The titles bestowed upon him by a democratic system he hated and mocked he therefore looked upon with contempt.

Interesting. I’m gonna read a book about his personality someday. Just haven’t had the mood hit me to wade through it. Especially with what we have going on in America now.

Interesting.

No, it actually isn't at all interesting. It's g*d-damn obvious that Hitler would have nothing but disdain and contempt for the silly little titles heaped upon him by a (in his eyes) totally moribund and weak democracy (the Weimar Republic).

Remember Goebbel's boast: "We come as wolves!"

LOL, you tried to pull a fast one on me. You say Hindenburg appointed him Reichskanzler? According to Google Translate, that means “Imperial Chancellor”. And he happily walked around with that title.

So I was right, Hitler was a Chancellor, like Merkel, or this clown in Austria.

The term should be scrapped.

LOL, you tried to pull a fast one on me.

How so?

You say Hindenburg appointed him Reichskanzler?

Correct.

According to Google Translate, that means “Imperial Chancellor”.

Correct.

And he happily walked around with that title.

According to Tischgespräche im Führerhauptquartier (Heydrich's Gedächtnisprotokoll of Hitler's nocturnal ramblings at the Berghof in Berchtesgaden - unfortunately, my wife sold my only copy many years ago, so I can only paraphrase from memory), Hitler mocked the title as a relict of the moribund Weimar Republic. He intended for it to be discarded after his death; future leaders would bear only the title of "Führer." (We all know how that worked out.)

So I was right, Hitler was a Chancellor, like Merkel, or this clown in Austria.

No, Merkel und Schallenberg are / were Federal Chancellors (not "Imperial Chancellors").

The term should be scrapped.

The term "chancellor" is untainted by Hitler's use of it. There were Reichskanzler prior to Hitler who were honorable men.
