'Lot of concern' over Russian military activity near Ukraine, top U.S. general says

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The United States is tracking enough indicators and warnings surrounding Russian military activity near Ukraine to trigger "a lot of concern" and Russian rhetoric appears increasingly strident, the top U.S. military officer said late on Thursday.

Army General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, declined to speculate about the kinds of options the United States might consider in the event of a Russian invasion. But Milley, in some of his most extensive remarks on the crisis, stressed the importance of Ukraine's sovereignty to Washington and to the NATO alliance.

"There's significant national security interests of the United States and of NATO member states at stake here if there was an overt act of aggressive action militarily by the Russians into a nation state that has been independent since 1991," Milley said during a flight from Seoul to Washington.

Just don’t expect me to subscribe to it..

Well, I don't care what you think either. I am merely pushing back against stupidity.

I’d bet $5 that Thoroughly Modern Mutinous Milley has been on his phone’s back channels, talking to his counterpart in China about “something” to do with it. He’s a traitor and needs to be stood against a stonewall.

We all miss the Cold War.

Hello monkey, Russian naval exercises just a mile off the shore of Japan in cooperation with China happened just a few weeks ago. Russia and China both sending military satellites aimed at the USA, almost at the same exact time, happened just within the past week or two. Russia installing anti-ship missiles on a disputed Island right next to Japan, putting Japan in range of it, just happened within the past day or two.

What can I do to help your monkey brain see that this is all happening after the cold war supposedly ended?

My point, which I think you are pretending to not understand, is that Russian aggression must be resisted everywhere or it will escalate even into NATO members like Poland. You cannot have a country like Russia just gobbling up countries at will. We let it happen in Georgia. It is happening in Ukraine. It will continue to happen all across the world and even into Poland. Though, actually, Russia is already attempting to destabilize Poland with the fake refugees.

When the Russians threaten NATO, give us a call.

Ukraine is not in Nato. Germany has interests in the gas line coming through Ukraine. They are welcome to roll in the panzers if they wish.

Russia is not going to cut off the spigot of hard cash coming from the west. And now that Biden has driven up the cost of fuel—the biggest export of Russia, Putin is flush with cash. He is not going to lose that.

Eastern Ukraine is pretty much a lost cause. Should we support them with weapon sales? Sure, why not? But sending a single US soldier there is just stupid.

Why don’t you grab a gun and head over there and kill all the Russians you see. We look forward to your reports.

Well...there was the Franco Prussian war in the last 1800’s.

I know...I am picking nits.

I understand your point and I agree with the intent. Not my monkeys...not my circus.

This is Germany’s problem. Accept more gas from Russia. Pay the hard currency. See what it gets you.

So, back to the Domino Theory of the Cold War?

That’s what you advocate?

Well, what do you call it when Russia invades Georgia, invades Ukraine, is threatening to steal even more of Ukraine, and is today harassing Poland, Japan, and many other countries besides? That seems to be how dominos work.

“Well, what do you call it when Russia invades Georgia, invades Ukraine, is threatening to steal even more of Ukraine”

The natural order.

As for Japan and Poland, I suspect US interests are real, at least in the case of Japan.

I’d have to be convinced on Poland. Our trade and security interests there are hard to discern. Germany has great interests in Poland. They should take care of that.

You would sit and make a calculated “what does this country provide the US” analysis with each country Russia invades in Europe? What would that look like in the end? I suspect you’re one of those people who are completely and utterly “demoralized,” as KGB defector Bezmenov put it. You’re so utterly confused and incapable of rational judgment that you don’t see the Russian nuclear missile with our name on it, hanging just over our head.

Absolutely.

It’s called Real Politik, and RATIONAL Foreign Policy. It’s been recently characterized as America First.

Concepts that seem foreign to you.

The US has three options in the event of a Russian invasion of Ukraine:

1) Do nothing
2) Do nothing
3) Do nothing
