Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, the Republican who maintained the enduring support of his blue-state constituents through boom times, the Trump presidency, and the COVID-19 pandemic, will not seek a third term in 2022, he said Wednesday.
A moderate who has kept his distance from the controversies of the national Republican Party and cast himself as a thrifty and thoughtful manager, Baker, 65, would have entered the race as its front-runner. His decision means he will forgo a shot at history: No Massachusetts governor has served three consecutive four-year terms.

The closest MA can get to a Republican tends to be a RINO
(Baker, Brown, Romney)
Baker a fave among moderates etc
Geoff Diehl is a candidate for the GOP gov nomination. He lost to Pocahantas Warren for Senate.
btw Diehl who hails originally from Bethlehem PA was a Democrat until about 2001 when he changed to Republican and moved to Whitman MA. In the past he has supported Joe “Brandon” Biden and Tom “Unfortunately” Reilly (atty gen)
Could he win the governorship?
Diehl—supported Trump
Baker— That would be a no.
no fan of Charlie Parker but this paves the way for Maura Healey. ouch!
No Polito either:
><In a joint statement with Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito, Baker said a campaign would have been “a distraction” from managing the COVID-19 pandemic — work that “cannot and should not be about politics and the next election.”
“We want to focus on recovery, not on the grudge matches political campaigns can devolve into,” Baker and Polito said.
Polito will also not seek reelection, they said in the statement.
Can’t get out of MA soon enough! Closing on a house in NH in 14 days!

I’ve been to conservative rallies and Diehl was there, unlike other republicans in this state.
Exactly what I was thinking - she would be the Hochul of MA if not worse.
Nobody deserves a third term as governor anywhere. If for no other reason than that the longer one person holds a job, that means that nobody else is being considered that may reflect new blood and new approaches to vexing problems that never seem to have been resolved.
Agreed, 8 years in office or if there is a 6 year term then 12, that's it. Term limits.
NH US senator Kelly Ayotte was not too crazy about supporting Trump and didn’t tie into his rallies IIRC. She wound up losing narrowly.
Could voter fraud (including busing people up to NH to vote) have cost Trump and Ayotte up there?
Hopefully NH can have some conservative tendencies.I sometimes call it
North Massachusetts. People escape taxes, fees, fines etc by moving up there...
then embrace left or moderate politicians.
