Progressives defend their approach as compassionate. Not everybody who is homeless is an addict, they say. Many are just down on their luck. Others turn to drugs after living on the street. What they need is our help. We should not ask people living in homeless encampments to go somewhere else. Homeless shelters are often more dangerous than living on the street. We should provide the people living in tents with money, food, clean needles, and whatever else they need to stay alive and comfortable. And we should provide everyone with their own apartment unit if that’s what they want.
But this “harm reduction” approach is obviously failing. Cities already do a good job taking care of temporarily homeless people not addicted to drugs. Drug dealers stab and sometimes murder addicts who don’t pay. Women forced into prostitution to support their addictions are raped. Addicts are dying from overdose and poisoning. The addicts living in the open drug scenes commit many crimes including open drug use, sleeping on sidewalks, and defecating in public. Many steal to maintain their habits. The hands-off approach has meant that addicts do not spend any amount of time in jail or hospital where they can be off of drugs, and seek recovery.
Now, even a growing number of people who have worked or still work within the homeless services sector are speaking out. A longtime San Francisco homeless service provider who read San Fransicko, and said they mostly agreed with it, reached out to me to share their views. At first this person said they wanted to speak on the record. But as the interview went on, and the person criticized their colleagues, they asked to remain anonymous, fearing retribution.

The reason we have a “homeless” problem is because Democrats have discovered that helping the “homeless” is a opportunity to create giant slush fund of money that is seldom accounted for.
They don’t want the problem solved.
I read that article, and the sentiments of “homeless advocates” are astonishing. The addicts themselves appear to be more straightforward than the social worker idiot advocates and “public servants”.
“Drug addicts are using dirty needles. We should give them clean needles.” Gee, uh...okay.
“Drug addicts need safe, warm, private places to shoot up. We should give them rooms they can stay in as long as they want at no cost to shoot up. “ Umm...sure.
“Drug addicts and other homeless people should be given apartments with Internet access (because they all have smart phones) at no cost to them.” Really?
“Drug addicts should be given free food, even alcohol so they don’t have to walk dangerous streets to get booze.” Wait, what?
You could go on like this forever, and that frog who was sitting in a nice cool bath is now bloated and boiled.
Yeah. That poster does say it all. Leftists are a cancer on the world.
I just wish I had the opportunity to answer the poster’s question: “What the f*ck is wrong with ...” well, them.
The activists desperately want this to be part of their Class Struggle, and see it as a symptom of the failing of Capitalist Economics.
That’s false.
It’s about human choices, mental illness, drug addiction, and it’s about activists (who do not really care about the homeless) who are trying to push a bad ideology.
One thing for sure, while all these advocates grow the problem, they sure make a comfortable living doing so.
Calling the help line:
Yes,I’m a homeless person and I would like a gin and tonic delivered to my apartment.
And if it’s not to much trouble could you send over a barely legal Asian prostitute?
I think I need a better explanation of why we should.
Discomfort is often the path to a better life.
Progressives shut down mental institutions and are emptying prisons. Progressives subsidize street people. Not surprising there’s a huge street people problem. The solution is to stop subsidizing street people, lock up drug users, open mental facilities and arrest drug dealers and criminals. The problem would dry up pretty quick.
The biggest ‘economic condition’ I can think of impacting homeless is that they start using drugs, and then every penny they can find goes to getting more drugs.
Sooner or later-—No longer have a car—a job—a residence—
The drugs win-—and the taxpayer loses.
I am old enough to see clearly that when I was a kid, there were NOT tents on city streets & sidewalks, along highways-—and humans were not relieving themselves like a junkyard dog where ever & when ever they pleased.
Drugs came & have swept up too many.
Interventions?
There were hardly ANY ‘Recovery” places when I was growing up.
Now—They are everywhere-—but the worst cases seem to become ‘homeless’.
Their brains are rotted out-—and THEY caused it all-—by using a ‘gateway drug’ in the first place.
NOT MY MONKEYS-—NOT MY CIRCUS
Will NOT accept the blame.
If you want to see proggy leftist trash 3xplode in paroxisms of spittle-flecked rage and invective, just tell them that they will get more of whatever they subsidize. Works every time.
What’s wrong with me? I am not a drug addict. I worked full time in college to pay me way. I worked crap jobs. I started a business and had a good run until the government shut me down thanks to their chinese masters and now I am busting my hump again to recover from a crap government run by a child sniffing chomo. What’s wrong with YOU?
