These vaccines have been very useful in reducing serious disease and death, but not much against infection and transmission of the Delta variant.
Delta rapidly blooms in the nasal passages (as much as 1,000 times the viral load, in 2/3rds the time of the initial strain), outside of the blood borne immune response. A nasally administered vaccine (at least seven are in development/testing worldwide) would probably be more effective in developing a more rapid immune response in the nasal mucosa (an Immunoglobulin E, or IgE response), to better resist initial colonization, and thereby lessen transmission. But as it is, our vaccines don’t seem to stop colonization in the nasal cavities in time to prevent transmission (although they do seem to dampen it marginally).
Our injected vaccines are effective in preparing the body to mount rapid antibody responses in the bloodstream, which produce much better outcomes for individuals who are infected.
Delta is a very transmissive virus (Omnicron reportedly even much more so). Most people will likely contract it before we stop getting waves of high case numbers - vaccinated or not.
If the vulnerable are vaccinated ahead of time however, far fewer will suffer serious illness or die from their infection.
Further mutations are a wildcard however. We had already been winding down before Delta arrived, and probably about half of the human population has yet to be infected, so we could still see significant new variants emerge.

It might be like Delta (it has some of the same mutations that enhance transmission), in that vaccinated people still get infected, but have improved resistance to serious illness or death.
We don’t know yet.
Clearly, vaccinated people are getting infected with Omnicron, and apparently transmitting it.
Reportedly, Omnicron has at least 52 mutations, 32 of them on the spike protein alone, and 10 of them just to the receptor binding domain at the tip of the spike, which the mRNA vaccines are designed to target. So theoretically, there is a high likelihood that so many changes could make this variant more vaccine evasive (and likewise more evasive of naturally acquired immunity as well). Again, we don’t know, but folks are rushing to test (some indications should be available in a week, from the labs).
South African health officials are reporting that Omnicron is producing far less serious illness or death than the other variants of concern, across the board. I have not heard anything from there about different outcomes between vaccinated or unvaccinated.

That is kind of the hope - that Omnicron will induce effective immunity, more safely than other variants. Neither of those characteristics have been confirmed yet, however.
I have seen some estimates that Omnicron is by far the fastest spreading variant - dramatically faster than Delta. I did not expect to see anything significantly faster than Delta.
One estimate that was posted on Free Republic, was that while Delta had a 70% advantage over the original strain for transmission, Omnicron was more like a 500% advantage.
If masks and lockdowns were ineffective in containing earlier variants, they would seem likely to provide even less delay against this variant. So this may be a mandatory (inescapable) form of inducing immunity - like a vaccination program of sorts.
I would guess that it is already seeded around the world, and in the United States. Two cases were reported in Ontario yesterday.
Let’s hope that it is not very lethal, and that it is effective in inducing broad immunity to COVID-19.
