WASHINGTON D.C. (7News) — Former Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose, who was at the helm of the department during the 2002 DC sniper attacks, has passed away at the age of 68.
Moose's wife, Sandy, made the unexpected announcement in a Facebook post on Thanksgiving evening. She stated that it was not her intent to be trite, but rather to share the news with the world in a timely manner.
"This evening, while watching football and sitting in his recliner, I'm so sad to say that the absolute love of my life passed away," Sandy wrote. "He called my name, and I came running but it was too late. His body was shutting down... He meant so much to so many, I'm at a loss... Godspeed Charles."
Sandy referred to her late husband as her "best friend since 1982." She did not disclose his cause of death.
Moose was chief of police in Montgomery County from 1999 to 2003 and is perhaps most remembered for his work during the 2002 DC sniper attacks.
In June 2003, Moose resigned from Montgomery County Police following a dispute over a book deal and movie consulting contract about his work during the sniper investigation.
In September 2003, 'Three Weeks in October: The Manhunt for the Serial Sniper' was released. The 384-page autobiography focussed heavily on the sniper attacks but also chronicled his life story. Moose appeared on national television programs including 'Dateline NBC' and 'The Today Show' to promote the book......
REACTION FROM THE COMMUNITY
Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich (D) released a statement Friday saying he was saddened to learn about Moose's passing.
"For 23 days, Chief Moose provided a calming presence in the midst of the terror and fear that consumed our County and the Washington Region and was nationally recognized for his efforts," said Elrich who joined the Montgomery County Council in 2006 and became executive in 2018. "[He] will be remembered as the face of Montgomery County during the 2002 D.C. Sniper tragedy."
The Montgomery County State's Attorney's Office credited Moose for providing leadership during some of the county's "darkest days."
Individuals in a pro-law enforcement Facebook group called 'We The Citizens Support Montgomery County Police Officers' shared their memories of Moose.
"RIP Chief. He earned my respect during the sniper shootings and I will be forever grateful for his leadership." — Cheryl Stokes Walker
"I remember the days of the snipers and how his speaking at the news conferences would make me feel a little safer, even though we were far from safe. He was very well respected." — Donna Digiacomo
Pass.
Exactly because there was zero evidence presented for the white shooter and white van/truck assumption made during the investigation. And it was a private citizen who ended up catching the shooters and reported them to the authorities.
But we’ll see Moose eulogized by the media as the key to finding the sniper shooters with his passing.
Describing this man as “dumber than pocket lint” does a grave disservice to pocket lint.

He had left the Portland Police Department when a cop shot and killed Kendra James.
I went to the community event set up for people to hear what the Police investigation said and answer questions from the public. Were you there? They murdered that girl.
I found them hilarious. But I was 3,000 miles away.
was it a guy in a white van? Too soon??
I’ve read that when several witnesses reported seeing two black guys driving away from the scene of the first few attacks that Moose said he didn’t want the cops harassing black drivers, so he fixated on a report of a white van driven by a white guy near the scene of the first shooting.
Not just zero evidence of white perps but Da Moose had telephone conversations with the guy about the snipers demands and ignored the distinct black speech inflection and persisted in the "white man in white van perp". White men in white service vans were pulled over at check points with AR-15s pointed in their faces.
One photo in particular stood out...an undercover cop in civilian clothing and a black Balaclava to hide his identity looked like nothing more than a terrorist. It's amazing that innocent drivers were not killed by the high tension frenzy to stop the snipers.
And that shit continued after Moose knew the perps were black because of FBI profiling.
Also revealing was that though the killings occured in Maryland and Virginia, in which the FBI had clear jurisdiction Moose remained as lead LEO putatively in charge, with the Feebs and other LEO present but mostly silent at the almost daily pressers.
As an area resident this struck me as very peculiar behavior from the usual aggressive take charge Feebs.
In retrospect one has to wonder if the deep state was testing the waters with the massive disinformation to justify the massive armed reaction, leaving the fool in charge as the designated patsy if things went truly sideways.
May that race baiting fool burn in hell.
Sounds like the black lawyer {ex-DC cop} that I used to see on Fox.
I always wondered if he really passed his legal exams because he couldn't speak basic English; wif, dat and ax are not the same as with, that and ask.
If an individual can't learn or refuses to take the time to speak correct English {and their job is to speak} I question their other qualifications and credentials.
That was Ted Williams who appeared on Greta’s show, all of the time. One of my many time outs from FOX News was because of complaining about him and Geraldo.
Clot perhaps?
That POS was an incompetent attention whore and refused to listen to the early eye witness reports of a raghead suspect... This contributed to at least 4-more shootings...
