US says 'all options' on the table in responding to Russian build-up near Ukraine

Washington is putting all options on the table in determining its response to Russia’s continued military build-up near Ukraine, a senior US official said on Friday.

US Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs Karen Donfried said the US is consulting with its European allies on the next moves in responding to Russia’s military escalation.

“All options are on the table. And there's a toolkit that includes a whole range of options,” Ms Donfried said in a call with reporters.

“What we're doing now is monitoring the region closely, consulting with our allies and partners on how do we deter Russian action.”

Russia has amassed thousands of troops and artillery on the Ukrainian border in recent weeks, sparking US and European concerns of a possible invasion.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is travelling to Latvia and Sweden next week to attend the Nato Foreign Ministerial and the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe Ministerial Council.

Russia’s military manoeuvres and threats to Ukraine will be high on both meetings’ agendas, the US official said.

“The reason we take those kinds of unusual manoeuvres seriously is because we all remember what happened in 2014. We saw Russia illegally annex part of Ukraine's sovereign territory when it occupied Crimea. And since then, we have seen ongoing violence in eastern Ukraine,” Ms Donfried said.

Russia was always a wannabee so can’t say they are a has been. They’re not a threat to us since they don’t have a death wish.

How are we going to go to war after we left all our equipment in Afghanistan?

“This is their backyard and they are willing to do whatever is necessary to protect it”

They are not trying to protect. They want to annex. That’s why they are getting along with China; both are in business to gobble up neighbors.

**************

Maybe not (and there is some evidence to support this) but they do have an understandable obsession with security around their borders. They have twice been invaded with catastrophic results to their homeland. You don’t provoke people who are extremely territorial.

I also wouldn’t refer to them as a wannabee. Their submarine force was formidable, and still is. And they have space based capabilities as well. They are a threat we need to take seriously. Russia is not Iran.

When you have leadership that is perceived as being weak and confused (by adversaries and “allies” alike) it invites aggression. That’s where we are now. Russia, China and others will not let this window of opportunity pass by without exploiting it. In fact, they would be stupid if they did.

After the Soviet Union broke up, we got Ukraine to give up their nuclear weapons by guaranteeing their sovereignty.

Well, that deal includes spilling American blood.

I, for one, would prefer Ukraine to still have nuclear weapons.

Russia doesn’t like what’s going on in Ukraine. Bear in mind that the Ukrainian Parliament adopted legislation reinstating membership in NATO as a strategic foreign and security policy objective. This notion does not set well with Russia, a country that has experienced disastrous land invasions in the past. Look at Russian history; they have an obsession with protecting their borders.

I remember the curiously bellicose saber rattling by Hillary in 2016.
They sure are hellbent to start a scuffle with Russia for some reason.

The Russians have always been paranoid about security; As for their submarine fleet, while it may be of some concern it does not come close to being a deterrent of our constantly on patrol fleet of ballistic missile submarines. In fact there is no nation which has any deterrent at all for these submarines since their exact location is not even known to the Pentagon and the fire power they carry is enough for any one of the subs to destroy the fighting ability of any country on earth.

The only threat of a nuclear attack comes from the Muslim infested countries and for that reason it makes sense for China, Russia and us to team up and take out every trouble making Islamic freak on the planet.
