Most states require the full bail amount be set as the penalty. The 10% often mentioned is what the bondsman charges.

Let’s say that you are a parent with a home and five million clear equity. You sign that equity or the full five million in an asset over to the bonding company. And he sets the bond in place with the court. He charges 10% for that service and keeps it regardless.

If you post five million cash with the court you save that ten percent.
