Russian officials in recent days have issued an unusual number of claims of what they consider fearsome provocations from neighboring Ukraine, mirroring the spurious expressions of concern that have previously served as a pretext to military deployments under the auspices of self defense.
Through a series of public statements and posts through its state news services, leaders in Russia on Monday presented the unified case that Ukraine was needlessly deploying its military forces to challenge Russia’s sovereignty and its nearby interests, that rising concern in the West of military action by Moscow represents only an attempt by Kyiv to mask its own intentions to do so, that the Western-backed peace process for the conflict in Ukraine is broken and that Kyiv’s allies in Europe and North America are not prepared to back up their pledges of support.
The claims, many of them roundly unfounded, follow widespread concern that Russia has dramatically escalated deployments of its forces around Ukraine. Recent operations in Belarus by Russian special operations forces and paratroops north of the Ukraine border that were ostensibly meant to maintain stability there in reality align with the Kremlin’s established pattern of influencing Minsk and preparing for war. Reports have emerged Russia has also mobilized the forces it deployed to the Crimean Peninsula at southern Ukraine earlier this year.
Several Ukrainian officials have expressed specific concerns about an imminent military action, including the chief of its military defense service, who told Military Times over the weekend he believes Russia will invade before January.

Yawn. Putin wants attention. Ukraine wants more cash. We’ve seen this movie before.
If msn.com is telling me something, I automatically assume its lies and propaganda.
Who lies more - Putin or American deep-state media? I can’t tell.
Russia is saying that the NATO pressure with three warships in the Black Sea and the NATO weapons supplies to Ukraine being used in the “civil war” area of eastern Ukraine constitute a threat.
Russia also noting constant NATO maneuvers with warplanes in the area.
Hmm. Why do the spellings of names of countries and cities suddenly change? It’s been Kiev for decades. Suddenly it’s Kyiv? Like Bombay and Mombasa. Or Ceylon and Sri Lanka? If the media is trying to be accurate why not change Russia, Germany, etc etc? Totally inconsistent nonsense.
Brandon needs to change the subject it looks like the US-NATO are pressuring Russia with their military supplies to Ukraine and moves in the region.
Is that a dog you’re wagging Brandon?
Maybe if Russian artillery wasn’t shooting at Ukraine in support of separatist forces, that artillery wouldn’t have gotten threatened by drones. Russia’s argument is principally grounded in the assumption that they have a right to meddle in Ukraine, using military force if they so choose, and any opposition is a threat.
Who knows what NATO is doing. They are big at empty gestures like warning China over Taiwan. Lot’s of talk and weird provocations, but absolutely no ability to back it up. Challenging Russia in the Black Sea is really really stupid. It’d be like Russia sending warships to Lake Michigan. Except having the insane Turks controlling the St Lawrence Seaway.
Not at all like Lake Michigan. Lake Michigan is fully within US borders. The Black Sea is bordered by what, 6 or 7 countries including several NATO countries, and Georgia, a NATO-aligned country.
“The West” doesn’t have support of their populus do to anything let alone war. If there is a war and there are a few casualties public support will collapse very quickly. Anyone can see that. This is what happens when you steal elections.
Maybe those Ukrainian officials and the chief of Ukrainian military defense service, should seek sanctuary in Afghanistan, the US can keep them safe there.
Militarily it would be similar is the point. Russia has a cruiser and 7 frigates and 7 diesel subs in the black Sea. Plus overwhelming air superiority. The Ukraine has one Frigate and some patrol boats. NATO has 3 destroyers.
There remains another chunk of eastern Ukraine that Putin wants. Since there is no organized resistance from the West, he will set up the usual pretexts and take it.
Good to see someone else who understands that geography makes a difference.
Why do I worry that Putin & Xi will coordinate with attacks on Ukraine and Taiwan? If they time it right, Joe will be in his nap and Kamala will be on the View.
All Russia reallhy wanted was Crimea. Donbas is just pot stirring and an attempt to keep Ukraine tied up in coflict.
“Why do I worry that Putin & Xi will coordinate with attacks on Ukraine and Taiwan? “
I predicted quite some time ago that such moves will take place NLT 2023.
