GOP gains leave Jersey Shore nearly free of Democratic legislators

Democrats’ successive losses over the past two legislative cycles have all but obliterated the party’s hold over the Jersey Shore.

Starting on Jan. 11, only one Democrat, Sen. Vin Gopal, will represent the coastal region south of Sayreville in the Legislature, and even he finds himself on a precarious perch amid Republican enthusiasm that could further imperil Gopal, a former Monmouth County Democratic chairman whose running mates lost re-election on Nov. 2.

“The party itself has to look a lot and see how they’re doing things differently. A win is a win, but Democrats should not be celebrating,” Gopal told the New Jersey Monitor.

Since 2019, Democrats have lost numerous Shore districts. Sen. Michael Testa (R-Cumberland) ousted former Sen. Bob Andrzejczak (D-Cape May) in the 1st District that year, with the Republican’s running mates taking the district’s two Assembly seats.

This year, the party lost another four Assembly seats in Atlantic and Monmouth counties and also failed to claim a state Senate seat in the 2nd District, which was left vacant by Republican Sen. Chris Brown’s July resignation (the seat had been controlled by Democrats for a decade prior to Brown winning it in 2007).

Every political corner has its own explanation for the defeats, but one thing is clear: Progressivism is not playing along the Shore.

“When Democrats are perceived as more generically Democrat, or when the party — statewide or nationwide — is perceived as more liberal or less in line with the center-right politics of those counties, that’s where the counties are going to revert to their means,” said Micah Rasmussen, director of Rider University’s Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics. “They’re going to revert to their traditional Republican leanings.”

NJ sucks because of it’s taxes and liberal politics but it does get a bad rap as being known for it’d refineries and storage tanks which are visible from the NJ Turnpike for about 10 miles or so when traveling that road.

NJ is called the garden State for a reason and if those who have never been through the State actually visited they would soon see the reason it has that designation. Outside of the North East corner of the State and Camden in the SW portion of the State it is truly a beautiful State with a whole lot of farm lands.

Ever eat at Scarborough Fair in Sea Girt? One of my favorites many, many moons ago...

Many moons ago I drove the length of New Jersey south to north. The only thing I remember is mountains of old tires, vast garbage dumps and an overlay feeling of “get me the F out of here!” In all fairness that was probably in the north.

There are just 2 roads traveling N to S and they are the Garden State Parkway which starts the Saddle River NJ area in the North, right at the NY State line and the NJ Turnpike which starts in Teaneck NJ about 15 miles north of Newark Airport.

I lived in NJ for 45 years and cannot imagine what road(s) you drove on and saw piles of tires.

I live in Bricktown, NJ. It’s in Ocean County.

The mayor is a Democrat.

This would have been ca late summer 1965 enroute between Langley AFB, VA and Westover AFB, MA. I don't remember what roads were in existence then. My memory is this was way north probably in metro New York area.

Oh look...they are still there!😀

Funny man.

Anyway, you most certainly traveled I95 thru NJ. I traveled the NJ Turnpike (that is designated I95) from end to end many times when I lived in NJ and aside from the storage tanks and refinery at the Northern part I never saw any tires.

In any case I live in SC now and there are no piles of tires anywhere, just broken down tractors and refrigerator strewn lawns and lots and lots of pick up trucks 😄 Just kidding, I love it here and wouldn’t think of leaving.

Hi.. Yup! Scarborough Fair is in my old stomping ground.. Haven’t been there in a few years though. It has tasty food and the atmosphere is cozy/fun.

I can believe the junk strewn lawns...the South still hasn’t fully recovered from The War. It’s kind of nasty here as you round the south end of Lake Michigan toward Gary, Indiana.

Dr. Steve Turley talks about this in his youtube videos. I like watching his videos, because he is always optimistic. Sometimes all the bad, crazy stuff happening makes me depressed, so it’s good to see something positive for a change.

“I can believe the junk strewn lawns..”

It was a joke. I can only speak for my local which is in the Northern part of SC near the NC border. No junk permitted in front yards around here (Lancaster Cty).

Stereotypes die hard. The north has it’s share of white trash lawns too as far as that goes.

“Stereotypes die hard. The north has it’s share of white trash lawns too as far as that goes.”

True enough. My wife had relatives in NY State near Amsterdam. Really beautiful country with farms all over the place (Mostly Dairy). What was odd is there would be really nice homes with beautiful landscaping right next to a shack looking home with a lawn littered with debris.

It’s been years since I have been up there since all the wife’s relatives are long gone or have moved away.

That’s us. But if we should secede from the rest of blue Jersey, we’d be trapped behind enemy lines! We’d need a Monmouth/Ocean County airlift for resupply!
