The University of California (UC) Board of Regents announced Nov. 18 to eliminate standardized tests from the admission process, without any alternative exam to be adopted in the foreseeable future.
The board originally approved in May 2020 the removal of standardized testing—for applications for admission to the nine UC colleges—and planned to put an alternative test in place of ACT and SAT by 2024.
During the board’s meeting on Thursday, the regents reached a consensus to keep exams out of admission requirements for a longer time, in favor of practices promoting educational equity and quality.
“UC will continue to practice test-free admissions now and into the future,” Michael Brown, UC provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, said in a statement.
Also, to help students build a successful college path, the UC will strengthen its relationship with K-12 schools, Brown said.
Cecilia Estolano, chair of the board, said the regents are not feeling comfortable using any assessment in the admission process. She added that the decision to removed standardized test is “significant” because it has set a standard that made a difference nationally.
Bob Schaeffer, executive director of FairTest: The National Center for Fair & Open Testing, told the Los Angeles Times that the UC is becoming “a national model for test-free admissions.”
He said many more schools are going test-free in their admission in the past two years.
Alvin Lyu, a fourth-year chemical biology student at the University of California—Berkeley, told The Epoch Times the board’s decision is “a fair move” as students have many more challenges due to the pandemic.
He added that it is best to have the ACT and SAT scores optional so that high school students with lower grade point averages can use it as a booster in the admission process.

This has Janet Napolitano’s and therefore Obama’s fingerprints.
Why even bother having a school then, other than to collect the tuition money, of course!
That could be streamlined.

I have seen first hand in a community college what happens to the kids who don’t really belong there - they know they can’t do the work, are embarrassed to talk in class, and have terrible attendance.
It’s already a thing at 4-year colleges that some kids just come to party until they flunk out. CA will just be standardizing that behavior.
True story, in our financial organization we have a black team lead who is so articulate in talking does not know how to calculate change in percentage when a number is changed to different value. I was appalled.
A sort of sad observation. I had a neighbor who was always treated as a child prodigy in our elementary school years. Junior high school was an adjustment. That special treatment evaporated. He actually wasn't a high performer outside an environment where his teachers were biased to believe it. We never crossed paths again in high school. I graduated a year early and started at UCSD. My neighbor arrived on campus the next year. I was thrilled to see him. After a couple weeks, I noticed he was spending all of his time playing pool in one of the student lounges. I left him to his devices. There were many brilliant students on campus that just showed up for exams and held a 4.0 GPA. He wasn't one of them. One quarter and gone. Some years later, I was teaching a course at Southwestern College. My neighbor was sitting out near the student union building. I stopped for a brief chat. He was taking a basket weaving class. That was the last time I spoke with him in person. I've seen some pictures that his wife posted of his family and children on Facebook. A different trajectory than I would have expected from our first meeting in July 1963.
Cloward - Piven all da way...
Some people want everything handed to them, and Democrats want equal results not equal opportunity. They are very ‘generous’ people but one is going above and beyond. I saw a video about MSNBC talking head Tiffany Cross offering her own bank account for Kyle Rittenhouse to drain, and you can check it out at Whatfinger News in crawler link top of page. She knows this will backfire and yet does it anyway, indicating a self-destructive personality. Lawsuit countdown has commenced. And from personal experience, tests do discriminate...against those who do not study. When I changed my habits my grades improved.
That is their next step. The left have a plan to destroy America and that is just a part of it.
Equity = Permanent Quotas.
Quality = Anti-White Discrimination.
They already have mentioned that over the last few years. Tests are ‘racist’. Sure they are...against people who don’t prepare for them. I learned that the hard way myself. If I can change, anyone can.
The dirty little secret is Democrats don’t want kids taught in schools and colleges, and haven’t for decades. When indoctrination and dumbing down proved too slow for them they changed their stance on illegal aliens too.
Next they will say that you just have to pay the $80,000 per year and not even have to go to classes if you are a minority. Then just hand them their diploma at the end. They will have no skills but companies will have to hire them anyway.
Will you trust your anesthesiologist if they are a minority when you have surgery? They must be hired. Qualified or not and if you die no one cares. Woke must be served. Competence, not so much.
You left off the significant debt burden students acquire from borrowing what is not covered by scholarships and grants.
So add ruining their credit to the other benefits that poor, downtrodden students derive from that freshly minted BA in Gender Studies.
