Texas Democratic Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson says she will retire before the 2022 midterms ending a career in Congress that lasted almost 30 years.
Johnson, who was elected to represent the Dallas, Texas area in Congress in 1993, announced during an event on Saturday that her current term would be her last.
The 85-year-old Texas Democrat did not endorse a replacement but said she hopes that she will be replaced by a woman.
"I will recommend to you who is the best to follow me," Johnson said. "My goal is to look for a female that is qualified. Anyone who has already been rejected in this district will not be getting my endorsement."
A spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee reacted to the news by suggesting it is a sign the Democratic Party is in trouble heading into the midterms.
"Committee chairs rarely retire unless their party is about to lose the majority. Smart Democrats know their majority is doomed because their policies have led to rising costs, skyrocketing crime, and a massive surge at the border," NRCC Spokesman Mike Berg said.

She would be 86 at reelection and hey, Elvis is dead and she may not feel so good either.
You beat me to it.
Well done.
It won’t matter how many more retire, they’re going to suffer a horrific beat down in the midterms.
When you steal an election like they did in 2020.
“You reap what you sow”
Eddie's getting out while the getting's good. 2022 mid terms will be as close as we'll ever get to term limits.
Just going to be replaced with a much younger version of this stupid woman, who will also be reelected 14 times, so what is there to get excited about?
Unfortunately she is in a very safe democrat district that will never replace her with a Republican. Still it is a good sign that all of these entrenched democrats are fleeing their sinking ship because they know if they stay they will be stuck in the minority party in Congress.
Another Dem bails out. They know what’s coming next Nov.
In 1994, the GOP had a 6 pt. lead in the generic congressional poll and gained 64 seats in the House.
The two most recent generic polls, for the next mid-terms, had the GOP ahead by 10 pts. and 13 pts.
Just more confirmation that even the democrats know that their days controlling Congress are quickly coming to an end. None of the democrats want to be stuck in the minority party.
The downside is that they are going to pass everything that has ever been on the socialist wish list on their way out because they have nothing to lose.
Why would a living fossil stay in congress till they’re 85?
Among other things Johnson has done to help her District is sponsor a Bill to create a National Park on the moon.
Identity politics, not ability. It has to be a woman. Token.
Good riddance.
There must be some old style Dems that see the writing on the wall and will not vote yes on everything.
“There must be some old style Dems that see the writing on the wall and will not vote yes on everything.”
++++++++++
You would think, would you? I believe Nancy just tells them vote for whatever I tell you to or resign. They know they are screwed either way, so may as well resign now.
“I have shaken down my supports for every last dime they have, I have promised to fix anything which someone would pay me to influence the fix, I have done all kind of favors (for money of course), I have given paid speeches, I have taken paid junkets to every resort in the world, I have been gifted by anyone who thought it would help their case, it’s time for me to retire, I have earned it and everyone is out of money……so great time to go out on top!”
And the beat goes on.......
What’s next: Johnson said Saturday that she would look for a qualified woman candidate to endorse as her replacement as her district is set to remain Democratic after redistricting, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Maybe we can elect a few true conservatives while we are at it.
