The elites love ‘Succession,’ but Trump-world-set ‘Yellowstone’ is TV’s most addictive show
NY Post ^ | 17 Nov 2021 | John Podhoretz

To judge by the passions and interests of the Twitterati and those who dominate the cultural conversation in the United States, you would think the most important, most beloved, most addictive show on television is HBO’s “Succession.”

Its third-season premiere in October was watched by 1.8 million people — an all-time high for the show (so says The Hollywood Reporter) that was “driven largely by digital platforms and HBO Max in particular.”

If you learned about America’s cultural habits only from the Twitterati, you would never know that the most important, most beloved and most addictive show on television — by the account not of the chattering classes but actual American television viewers — is, in fact, “Yellowstone.”

That show’s fourth-season premiere, on a hard-to-find basic cable channel called the Paramount Network, was watched by 12 times as many people as “Succession” — 14.7 million, according to Nielsen. It was the highest-rated fictional program in all of television last week; only sports broadcasts topped it.

There’s no way to stream a new episode right after it airs. You watch it when it’s on, or you tape it, or you miss it. What’s more, it doubled its viewership from its season premiere last year.

To offer a contrast: The audience for “Succession” rose 200,000, an increase of about 15 percent. “Yellowstone” grew by 5.5 million.

I love Yellowstone, but I’m not sure there is a ‘good’ character in the whole show. They all seem to have their own version of evil they’re carrying around with them.

It probably is the least woke show on TV. Males (except one) are strong, take charge, don’t put up with any crap from anyone. The last episode had even the strong female types get “corrected” by their men. (To be fair, it did have one feminist type scene, but that was justified.)

I don’t think there has been such a “masculine” show since Gunsmoke. And that is likely what is attracting viewers.

I found it in the cable listings - is it hard to catch up with the plot and characters?

We were not seeing it. Found it boring

I getcha. Personally, I kind of enjoy a little boring. Or, more specifically, a slower moving storyline that is not all non-stop fast-moving start to finish. I like getting to know characters and different subtly nuances and things that sort of draw out.

Since the modern "binge-watching" era, where you can knock out 50 one hour episodes of a show, I've found myself liking movies a lot less. Having a story told from start to finish, intro to problem to conclusion, over the course of 100-120 minutes is way too fast for me. I find the telling of the story to be too direct and lacking subtlety. I like to savor it a bit.

But, I can see how others may want the stories to just "get on with it" and move a lot quicker. To each his own!

Like the Sopranos. No real "white hatted" cowboys in Yellowstone.

What streaming platforms do you subscribe to?

Don’t get confused between Paramount + and Paramount which are separate.

Yellowstone is only live on Paramount, which is available on HULU, Dish, and DirecTV.

But the new Yellowstone prequel series will only be available on Paramount +

Yellowstone re-runs Season 1-3 are on Peacock

Confused yet?

I mean the tech, not the shows. Some of my all time favorite movies are from the 40’s and 50’s and early 60’s.

I watch Yellowstone and it is an interesting show. Basically, it is about gangsters who wear cowboy hats. If you ever watched Daredevil on Netflix, you are familar with the Kingpin. Kevin Costner plays that type of character on Yellowstone. What is ironic is there are really no good guys. All the characters are gangsters in one way or another. Some are out-right gangsters and some are gangsters with a badge. The viewer tends to root for Costner and his clan, even though they are the most ruthless of the gangsters. Maybe it is due to they are trying to protect their little empire in Montana - not trying to expand outside their sphere of influence - while the other gangsters are corporate, government, do-gooder types that interfere in everyones business and attempts to meddle everywhere worldwide.

I am not that thrilled with the addition of that kid. It is like they are tring to humanize the daughter and the ranch boss.

It took me a while to figure it all out, and a subscription to Peacock to watch 1-3

Yea, definitely adds another dimension for some reason.

I discussed this with my brother, comparing how some TV detectives/law enforcement characters would deal with these people. Bobby Gorin of Law and Order: Criminal Intent would try to get them to confess. Raylan would just shoot them.

" There has not been one man calling another man his husband.

That’s my litmus test. "

I watched about 10 min about a year ago and there were around 50 F bombs in that short time.......never watched again or will ever watch. That's my litmus test and I'm sure Kosner will have a boyfriend in the shows future.
