Homeschooling surges among black families

The coronavirus pandemic boosted home education among African Americans, but it wasn’t the only factor...

....The COVID-19 pandemic drove an increase in homeschooling across all demographics, but the boost was particularly large among African American families. According to Census Bureau data, the percentage of black families educating children at home grew fivefold in six months, from 3.3 percent in April 2020 to 16.1 percent in October 2020.

Steven Duvall, director of research at the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), said that in previous years African American families homeschooled at about half the rate of white families. But more recent surveys show the black homeschooling rate is only a couple of percentage points behind that of white families. “It just shows you how diversified the homeschool movement has become,” Duvall said.

That shift began even before 2020. According to a 2015 report by Brian Ray at the National Home Education Research Institute, the number of black homeschooling families “nearly doubled from 1999 to 2012.”

Amber O’Neal Johnston, who helped start the Heritage Homeschoolers group the Mayfields joined, said she has seen more black families involved since she started homeschooling about seven years ago, but the growth has exploded in the past two years. Heritage Homeschoolers opens registration to new families twice a year, in January and August, and in 2019 and early 2020, the group received fewer than 20 applications in each of those months. Since August 2020, though, 34 to 41 new families have applied each month registration is open.

if the homeschooling community can avoid segregating (which it seems to be doing) by race, it'll be a very good thing.

most homeschoolers are Christian believers. I hope Christians of all races can work together in the homeschool community.

At any rate, seeing Christians take charge of their kid's education is OUTSTANDING.

Unfortunately it's too late, they'll still die at the hands of uncontrolled feral Negros.

Those states which can pass and implement education vouchers will see an explosion of home and private schoolers. The NEA will die on the vine wherever this is implemented.

All the homeschool groups I know welcome everyone, but whether people choose to self-segregate is another matter. I read a story about a black mother who chose to homeschool because she bought into the lies similar to what CRT teaches. I hope not very many minority homeschool parents think that way or teach their kids that white people are the enemy. Homeschoolers need to stick together, and Christians must always be one body in Christ.

Wouldn’t they have to know how to access the internet for this to work?

No they won't. If the government is paying for home schoolers or private schoolers then the government will exercise control over what and how they teach.

Good homeschool communities are commonplace. These provide outings, Sports, activities, and study groups.

How much of the battle for increasing seats at the homeschooling table is hampered by continued taxing of individuals who do homeschool?

I certainly never wanted my tax dollars supporting public education if I don’t use it, nor have dependents who would use it. Plus look at the past performance of trustees to these federal funds. It is a sad joke indeed.

Gubmint vouchers come with conditions.

Be independent at at all costs.
Under radar as much as possible.
These checks are not a gift.

I disagree. Most of the voucher programs have been predicated on the idea of returning your tax money to you. The people who put together many of these programs realize the problem with government strings. That is why Obama HAD to kill the DC program, because it was far too successful in getting people off of the plantation.

Even in Minnesota the NEA fights any idea of vouchers, because even the worst private or home school is far better than the public school.

Well then if the voucher is no more than the dollar amount of the taxes you paid that went for primary and secondary schools then I would be OK with that. Anything above that amount is a government subsidy and they're going to want control over how it is spent.

Please remember that the money the fed sends for education is taxpayer money no matter what.

The money is sent to the states, who then have the authority over what is done with it. At no time would the feds be ‘legally’ able to claim jurisdiction since they gave the tax payer money to the states.

This has been fortified by different court cases, where the feds really couldn’t affect state education.

Additionally, it has been shown that the entire federal education apparatus could disappear overnight and would affect ‘nothing’ at the state level. So a lot of states have been appropriating the education funds for what they deem is necessary for state education.

My niece and nephews are siblings in a world famous pop band, and they were home schooled by their Christian mom. I really salute her, as they are the most polite, loving, bright, and grounded young kids I know.

True. But any subsidy is tax money from one person going into the pocket of another person. What the government subsidizes, the government controls.

As part of the homeschooling curricula, take the children to an NRA Range for instruction, and apply for CCWs for the eligible ones.

Good news. Parents will want to teach their kids right, not subject them to the woke abuse they get in public school. Conservatives will come out of this.
