Adem Somyurek returns to parliament to block Andrews government’s pandemic Bill (Victoria, Australia)

The Andrews government’s controversial pandemic management Bill is in disarray with former government MP Adem Somyurek revealing he will block it.

Mr Somyurek on Wednesday night told the Herald Sun he would sensationally return to parliament to oppose the Bill, saying it gives “too much power to the government” and could lead to a “tyranny of rule by decree”.

Victoria was already “essentially an elective dictatorship”, he added, saying the bill does not include adequate checks to prevent abuses of power.

The government had assumed it would win the upper house vote scheduled for Thursday with the support of three crossbench MPs it secured a deal with on Monday.

But Mr Somyurek’s decision will mean the government will fall short of a majority, providing the eight other crossbenchers – who have already committed to opposing the Bill – vote against it. In that scenario, the Bill will fail.

Speculation about Mr Somyurek’s intentions on Wednesday prompted suggestions the government would delay the critical vote until the next sitting of parliament, in two weeks, rather than risk the embarrassment of such a high-profile loss.

That would give it time to win over at least one more crossbencher, but would likely involve massive concessions being made.

If the government cannot force the bill through in the next two weeks before the State of Emergency expires, it will not be able to enforce any pandemic orders.

KEYWORDS:
Somyurek is a socialist and may well be as corrupt as hell, but if he stops this bill, I'll happily buy him a beer any time he wants.

We've managed to force some concessions already - the Bill is better than it was when first presented to Parliament - but it would still allow for significant potential of abuse of power, so killing it or getting further amendments will be a huge positive.

Somyurek gives us the numbers - as long as every Member of Parliament who has committed to blocking the bill holds firm. Without him, it will pass by one vote.

A tied vote means it doesn't pass - there's no tie break.

"significant potential of abuse of power"

The "power" is already being abused. Good luck in reining in the tyrants.

Yes, some powers are already being abused.

This Bill would allow much wider and easier abuse. It makes the situation far worse.

“Tyranny of rule by decree”...you've got that Down Under too?You guys are moving into summer...seems to me that restrictions would be lifted rather than strengthened.

BTW... that quote sounds like something Churchill would have said.

Most restrictions have been lifted.

But Daniel Andrews has presented a Bill to Parliament to ‘deal with future pandemics’. Some of its provisions include, the Premier (ie, Daniel Andrews) having the power to declare a pandemic - even if there are no cases of the disease in the entire state - which would then allow the Health Minister (ie, somebody he appointed in his government) to ‘make any order’ to deal with the ‘Pandemic’. It’s an absolutely extraordinary overreach but until now, it looked like he had the numbers to get it through Parliament.

At least some Australians have the guts to speak the truth, and recognize the menace ... it's a small start toward reclaiming freedom

Just heard on the news this morning that the Governor of New York (the new one,not the one who killed 15,000 old folks with his stupid Covid policy) is threatening tighter restrictions. But then she's a Democrat so few people are surprised.

On the subject of 'future pandemics" there are many here, including a great talk show host in Boston (Howie Carr, huge Trump supporter),who are convinced that Democrats are planning to adopt their Covid power grab to fit future "crises".Perhaps a little bit...or a lot...like East Germany,or Dan Andrews.

If you ever have some free time Howie Carr is on iHeart radio (WRKO) weekdays from 7AM to 11AM (your time). He's excellent (and no,we're not related).
