Australian women to sue Qatar over invasive strip-search ordeal
The Guardian ^ | 15 Nov 2021 | AFP

A group of women subjected to invasive gynaecological searches at Doha airport will sue Qatari authorities, seeking redress for an ordeal that sparked global condemnation.

Women on 10 Qatar Airways flights from Doha, including 13 Australians, were subjected to the examinations late last year as authorities searched for the mother of a newborn found abandoned in an airport bathroom.

The incident caused outrage, and fuelled concerns about Qatar’s treatment of women.

Damian Sturzaker, from Sydney-based firm Marque Lawyers, said seven affected passengers now plan legal action to “send a message to Qatari authorities that you can’t treat women … in this manner”.

...

Qatar’s embassy in Canberra and Qatar Airways did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The ordeal began when a disturbing message came over the intercom on the flight, demanding that all women onboard disembark the plane with their passports.

The confused passengers, some of whom feared it was a terrorist incident, were then taken by guards on an elevator to awaiting ambulances - with no idea what was in store for them.

'I thought we were going to be kidnapped or held as legal pawns. I feared we were going to be raped and that my child is going to be taken and that we will never see family again,' a woman on board Flight 908 named Anna told 60 Minutes.

'It was the scariest moment of my life.

'I was crying and shaking and squeezing my baby. I didn't want to get on an elevator with armed guards not knowing where we were going and where we were being taken.'

Once inside the ambulance a nurse briefly explained what was going on and told her to lay down on the bed.

'She grabbed under my pants and my underwear and she stripped them,' Anna said.

Bizarre situation.

Sympathy fail.

They were actually looking for the woman who abandoned a newborn baby in an airport. Attempted murder, abandonment, gross negligence.

I guess Qataris have higher moral standards than Austrailians.

Whoa when a crime occurs, every innocent person in proximity does surrender heir God given rights! That’s nuts!

They’re not in Australia any more. But do they actually have more rights there? You have to watch everything you say in public or discuss on the internet, or the PC cops pay you a visit.

They were in Qatar.

In foreign countries people are under the laws of that country vs. their own.

I’m pretty sure a female security officer taking a peek at a woman’s underwear is not a violation of “God given rights”.

Retards go to Qatar. Complain that they are totalitarian and violated their rights. Go to Australia and get put under lockdown.

Is this much different than what’s happening to the Jan 6th protesters, who were invited into the Capitol Building by the police and now are political prisoners for following police orders?

Women were forced to strip and given "gynaecological searches".

From experience, bloody underwear and a slow walk would have been enough of a sign. No need to go full pornhub.

I think, under the circumstances, not an unreasonable response from Qatari officials.

“Women were forced to strip and given “gynaecological searches”.”

Define “search”. A woman officer taking a peek or feet up in stirrups.

“Sturzaker said the women were seeking a formal apology, compensation, and protection....”

You are the one imposing your personal values, beliefs and social mores upon another country, its people and its established legal authorities in defense of the criminal act child abandonment.

But I’m ridiculous?

“but thank god I am a Man and when I go to that side of the world, I don’t have to fear this happening to me.”

Well, I’ve had some run ins over there, being detained, running into radicalized, ex-Taliban, etc. They’re old school, traditional values.

Always be honorable, direct and respectful. Be polite and take control when necessary. Honor with outsiders (new people) is important. If a situation goes sideways redirect it to the formal and polite. If an attack is pending be ready to flee or fight.

The authorities will usually side with a Westerner. They’re Old School. They know we invented nearly all the conveniences they appreciate. Don’t be a slouch. They resent that. Gulf states are generally more congenial and safer than Western nations.

I’d suggest you read the article or the excerpt. The female nurses basically stripped the women and their genitals “inspected”. Some had even more invasive “tests” done forcibly.
