The Walgreens in San Francisco's Noe Valley neighborhood was temporarily closed this week because of a "severe rat infestation," and the store will not reopen until it passes an inspection, a report from the San Francisco Department of Public Health revealed.

Inspectors visited the store at 1333 Castro, near 24th Street, on Nov. 8, and ordered immediate closure of the store due to "imminent health hazards that could not be immediately corrected."

A report from the inspector noted that food was "contaminated and/or adultered" by vermin on the sales floor and in an upstairs storage area.

"Observed containers of noodles, flour and other food products gnawed and with vermin droppings on and around them," the report said.

Droppings were found on the sales floor, on shelves, on and around food products and on top of storage area, the report said. One dead rat was spotted on a glue trap.

They’ve had a severe rat infestation in SF ever since Willie Brown was elected - they should be used to it by now.

I suspect the people crapping in the street don’t care if the stores they shoplift have rats.

Noe Valley is a nice place - one of the few "middle class" neighborhoods where kids could walk to school. Or it used to be just a few years ago.

Wanna bet this Walgreens never re-opens? I'm thinking this is some kind of insurance scam to pay for the relocation outta SF.

I really hate severe rats, much prefer the moderate rats.

We had a severe rat infestation problem and because of the health risk to our shoplifters, er ah, shoppers, we closed the store until further notice. If we are unable to remediate the rat problem, unfortunately we will have to close the location permanently. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Wasn’t sure if they were referring to their new ‘clientele’ or real rats. After reading the article still not sure

They came inside the store because the sidewalks and streets outside were so fouled with human excrement, urine pools and used narcotics syringes and garbage dropped by derelicts in tents that they couldn’t take the filth outside.

They have standards, too.

San Fransickans have only themselves to blame. They keep electing Rats, so what do they expect? At a certain point, you should be adult enough to know when someone is lying to you in order to gain political power, no?

few "middle class" neighborhoods where kids could walk to school. Or it used to be just a few years ago.

Now the kids on the run to school, backpacks bobbing and hair flying in the wind say:

"Monday and it's back to the old rat race for us."

Why don’t they turn a few dozen snakes loose in the store?
