Guitarist Robert Cray Drops from Eric Clapton Tour over Anti-Lockdown Song

Blues guitarist Robert Cray has dropped out of Eric Clapton’s U.S. tour citing the British guitar legend’s anti-lockdown stance as well as his public opposition to coronavirus vaccine mandates.

In an interview with the Washington Post, Cray said he backed out from a tour with Clapton after the latter released a song last year comparing lockdowns to slavery.

The song in question is “Stand And Deliver,” a joint release with fellow sceptic Van Morrison that saw Clapton sing: “Do you wanna be a free man / Or do you wanna be a slave? / Do you wanna wear these chains / Until you’re lying in the grave?”

As he explained to the Post, Cray – a black man born into a segregated community in 1953 Georgia – rejected such a comparison.

Cray revealed he sent Clapton an email after he heard the track last December, saying “his reaction back to me was that he was referring to slaves from, you know, England from way back.”

++ It was literally the biggest musical ripoff ever. ***

No - my vote is for a Kenny Roger Christmas show where he sang two solo songs

and left the rest for the cast except the group songs.

That’s too bad. Always liked Cray’s music. But now? He can go jab himself.

Not sure about that. My guess is all the rest of the cast members were better than he was. Not sure how he did it - KR

When he was starting out he played for John Mayall’s Mayall’s groups. Mayall had hundreds of blues 78s and albums. He was the Bob “the Bear” Hite of England (Canned Heat co-founder). He did tributes to Robert Johnson, the long series of Blues Guitar Crossroads Festivals and many more. Album with BB King.

I have two of Robert Cray's albums, Strong Persuader, and Sweet Potato Pie.

I like Strong Persuader.

Sorry to hear he is a Leftist.

Thing is, many from my generation have seen him and don't even know it. Ever see the movie "Animal House"? Of course you have...he is one of the Guitarists in "Otis Day and the Knights" that plays "Shout!"

Just some trivia...

I don’t care about their politics. I’ll side with the American over the Brit.

I loved Cray’s album, Midnight Stroll.

Cray is a really good blues guitarist. His tunes include Smoking Gun, Phone Booth, Right Next Door and I guess I’ll Never Know. Tons more balls than EC.

Cray may be a good guitarist. I would doubt if he is even close to Eric Clapton, who is considered one of the greatest guitarists ever.
Does Cray have more “balls” than Eric Clapton?
Not a chance.
Cray folded to the woke crowd like a cheap suit. After first agreeing to take part in the concerts. No balls.

He apparently did not appear in the credits, but in his words:

INTERVIEWER: When you were in Animal House, did you think that was your big break?

CRAY: No. That was filmed, I think, in ’76 or ’77. I was living in Eugene, Oregon, and some lady asked me if I wanted to be in a film. It was after a gig was over at this club, and I sarcastically said, “Yeah, right.” And she took my information and a couple months down the line, she called me. Nobody knew what it was. We weren’t told the working title of the film.

It was cool being on a movie set and stuff, and seeing a lot of locals in the area being picked up to be extras as well. And I’m going to go into this story: We had the Cray Band, and there was a local group called the Nighthawks with Curtis Salgado, a singer-harmonica player. We had a splinter group, and we called it the Cray-Hawks. And on Monday nights, we would play at the Eugene Hotel. Curtis was the harmonica player-singer who wore Ray-Bans.

One night John Belushi came in, and people were saying to Curtis, “John Belushi’s in the audience.” And Curtis is going, “Who’s John Belushi?” Because we always worked on Saturday nights. So eventually, Belushi came on and did his Joe Cocker impersonation. He sat in with the band.

INTERVIEWER:You hadn’t ever heard that before?

CRAY: No.

INTERVIEWER: What’d you think?

CRAY: I thought it was kind of stupid. But he was a nice guy.

Clapton is the most overrated guitarist on the planet. He was pasteurized, watered down blues made acceptable to the masses. He can’t hold a candle to J.J. Cale, Freddy King, Albert King or any of the other guys he copies.

Except you are wrong on every single point.
All that could be true about Robert Cray though. You seem pretty confused.

You liking or not liking any guitarist ( for covid vaccine political reasons), doesn't make them great or not great.

I don’t give a damn about either of their politics as it has no bearing on their musical abilities. Likewise their covid stance. Clapton lost his fire in the belly long ago. Like after Derek and the Dominos. He’s lame as hell. Maybe he can still thrill the NPR crowd.
