Rep. Madison Cawthorn, a conservative Republican firebrand, shook up next year’s congressional race on Thursday night when he announced he would run for a different congressional district — effectively pushing a more traditional state lawmaker who was expected to run out of the race.
“North Carolinians don’t settle for the status quo. We defy it. We made history together last year when you sent me to Washington to shake up the swamp and fight for you,” Cawthorn said in a video he tweeted on Thursday.
He cited the fact that redistricting has created a “brand new” 13th Congressional District, which splits his current 14th Congressional District.
“After consulting my family, my constituents and with prayer for consideration, I believe the answer is clear. We have a unique opportunity to increase conservative leadership in North Carolina,” Cawthorn said.
“I have every confidence in the world that regardless of where I run, the 14th Congressional District will send a patriotic fighter of D.C. But knowing the political realities of the 13th District, I’m afraid that another establishment, ‘go along to get along Republican’ would prevail there. I will not let that happen. I will be running for Congress in the 13th Congressional District.”
Cawthorn, first elected to the House of Representatives in a June 2020 runoff election, has faced controversy over past statements on “rigged” and “stolen” elections, “America First” rhetoric and, more recently, calls for primarying the Republican lawmakers who voted for the recently passed bipartisan infrastructure bill.
When North Carolina’s 13th District was drawn without an incumbent, many political observers speculated that state Speaker Tim Moore would run for that seat in 2022.
But shortly after Cawthorn announced he would run for the seat, Moore announced Thursday night he would not.

Speaker Moore will now NOT be a congressman.
btt
Interesting. How many miles does he have to move? Rats would normally charge carpetbagging. but that didn’t stop Hillary or the Liz Cheney run for the Senate in Wy. She’ll get her just desserts hopefully.
Next question: How many more potential ‘moves’ like this can we pull off? He’s a young man so moving isn’t too much of a change.
How many ready-to-retire congress critters can take one for the team and run in purple/blue districts? 2022 will probably be unnecessary but ‘24?
YES- Speaker Moore will remain WISELY in POWERFUL place to deliver NC representation in Washington— to Conservatives- true ones who are also Republicans, and not owned by Tobacco machine of demonrats and fakes, like outgoing Burr.
NC FReepers get active and stay active to roll up these liberals of Charlotte, Asheville, and... Chapel Hill (and Duke too- see: Rob Califf to be re-appointed to the FDA head- Hillary’s pal who was supposed to engineer obamaumaocare. Biden is putting him back in. A Duke ultra-liberal Commie Cuba loving owned by Merck, administrator/cardiologist).
As a point proof some here may be forgetting what Speaker Moore DID to prevent the federal election steal by Election theft DEMONRAT operative Marc Elias (he of the partnership with Stacey Abrams to STEAL the two Senate seats Warnock and Ossoff).
Moore advocated and passed NC Legislature resolutions/lawsuits that brought the issues to the attention in a lawsuit ruled on by two FEDERAL JUDGES— who ruled injunctions against the LONG counting time after the election (allowing ballot late stuffing) AND also retained the “requested only” mail ballots requiring several layers of ID and true security envelopes— again preventing the manufacture of “ballots” which would not have been. Trump WON NC as a result.
Should also mention Moore helped- on the strength of many NC conservatives— 2nd Amendment defender Mark Robinson was elected Lt. Governor (vs. the demonrat machine of liberal-and the liberal Attorney General legal harrassment machine with WRAL and Capitol Broadcasting-— what should we call it but neo-Socialist, and secular “jew”-ish corporate media of Raleigh).
The strong partnership is discussed here, with Walker running for the US Senate to replace the intel embarrassment of Burr (the desert korps volkswagen driving tool of Tobacco- and pal of VA Sen. Warner supporting the Russia Hoax all along- one of THEM):
"Too many of them stood by and watched while extremists like Cawthorn lied and fear-mongered their way into power."
I'm assuming you agree with the article and do not like Cawthorn?
If you are congratulating Cawthorne for pushing out Moore....
.....and if Moore, indeed, was personally responsible for promoting Mark Robinson, t
...then you’re supporting the wrong candidate!
Robinson is a powerhouse and perhaps will be the next governor of North Carolina
Personally I don’t like what Madison slyly did.......Opportunistic!
Just curious…has anyone in the media identified the LIBERAL “firebrands” and “extremists” in congress?
“I’m assuming you agree with the article and do not like Cawthorn?”
No, that’s not the case. My interest was the topic of the article, not the stupid political bias of the author.
“The way the lines are drawn, he would have been reelected in his old district,” Heye said, adding that Cawthorn “absolutely” meant to push out Moore.>>> Good job maybe a conservative republican with a strategic goal. Goodbye republican swamp creatures.
And now in PA dr. Oz is carpetbagger for Governor. (or senator) forget which one.
It’s not clear if he will have to move since it’s redistricted creating another district. He can ask Maxine Waters how she’s managed it all these years without moving. Heck - she doesn’t even have to live in the district she represents.
“”He’s a young man so moving isn’t too much of a change.””
But he’s a handicapped young man in a wheelchair. There no doubt would be plenty of help for him if it is required he move.
I agree.
Mark for Gov.
Anyone have a link to the new district map?
PA dr. Oz is carpetbagger for Governor. (or senator) forget which one.
Senator. Face looks familiar and pretty-those things count. Name recognition too. If it works I say go for it. Primary is May 17 with a filing deadline of Feb. 15. We’ll see.
Gotta step lightly these days...the orthodoxy police are quick to judge, slow to apprehend.
lol.
Cawthorn’s new district includes the western edge of Mecklenburg County and Gaston, Cleveland, Polk, Rutherford, McDowell and Burke counties. It’s seen as a safe Republican district for the 2022 elections.
Madison took over Mark Meadows district.
Mark was beloved.
There was some controversy over Madison...
....but folks eventually leveled out
Now this!
