The United States would be incapable of defending itself against a hypersonic missile akin to the experimental one China launched over the summer, according to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Gen. Mark Milley acknowledged the gap in the U.S. defense capabilities during a talk at Duke University on Friday afternoon.
Over the summer, China tested “a nuclear-capable hypersonic missile” that “circled the globe before speeding towards its target, demonstrating advanced space capabilities that caught U.S. intelligence by surprise,” the Financial Times reported last month. However, Chinese government officials have denied it.

Is Milley’s reference regarding a first strike nuclear attack or conventional war?
The technology changes the equation for both types of warfare, but I would argue that it is more of a conventional threat than nuclear in that a surprise nuclear attack is already quite possible for any nation-state possessing a robust satellite program or basic cruise missile technology.
The primary threat for conventional warfare would be against our aircraft carriers. Many of us have felt it was unwise to put so many eggs in one basket (so to speak) for a very long time.
They are the most awesome instruments of conventional war on the planet, but if they cannot survive against a comparatively cheap weapon system we better rethink the investment.
