Our Veterans Need Help Becoming Civilians Again
Wall Street Journal ^ | Nov. 11, 2021 7: | Daniel Gade

Our treatment of troops returning from combat has led to a culture of permanent disability. They deserve better.

Far too often, however, veterans returning to the civilian world are diverted from paths of self-sufficiency and shuffled down paths of dependency and dysfunction. I witnessed this personally at Walter Reed. Soldiers were transformed from men and women of consequence—bravely fighting for their country—to wards of the state, dependent on others and on charity for their sustenance, purpose and meaning. One soldier whom I knew had been wounded in 2003 and was fully able to function by 2005—yet lingered on at the hospital until at least 2009. His identity had become “patient,” and his goals had been foreclosed.

From the article: "Later, as I took on various roles in government, I observed these contortions professionally. While working as an adviser to the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs on disability compensation from 2008 to 2013, I was privy to backroom conversations acknowledging that the system was a “one-way ratchet”: Only higher payments and increased disability ratings were to be recommended. Too often missing from the discussion was any idea of helping these veterans rehabilitate themselves, with more training, counseling and employment aimed at overcoming disabilities."

It is a cause for reflection to put it mildly. Clinton attacked the Balkans from 10,000 feet. No collateral damage on our end and no one cares. 5k dead in Iraq/Afghanistan along with many more maimed. Trump spoke to it and he got it from the deep state more than the democrats. Our nation continually looks for enemies. They’re out there but an ounce of prevention is never even looked into. We are now being set up to where a pound of cure won’t be enough. I’m talking domestic issues. It’s all there for all of us to see.

Internationally? Think Washington’s entangling alliances and Eisenhower’s Military industrial complex. Chickens coming home to roost?

Is the WSJ part of the problem? The NY times has had blood on it’s hands for 100 years-think Ukraine.

Take 100% care of service injuries, then butt out. Quit treating vets like retards that need years of coddling to be able to function again.

This is some Eleanor Roosevelt crap. After WWII she said reopening Marines needed several months of civilization training before being allowed back into society. She was pimp slapped down on that one.
The victim meme is annoying.

Just one I’d like to see a Veterans Day where the main focus was vers as strong guys balls, not victims. And I suppose it’s just crazy and impossible to even mention armistice day and WWI.

AMEN! I’m a vet of 26 years and I get sick and tired of the whole “our poor suffering vets need our help” crap.

I had zero problems transitioning back to civilian life after six years in the Marine Corps back in the late 70s. I also had no issues after doing my time in Afghanistan.

Veterans need help becoming civilians again? The way the Democrats have openly supported globalist totalitarians, veterans may need to be called back to defend this country from those attempting to destroy it.

—”After WWII she said reopening Marines needed several months of civilization training before being allowed back into society.”

Unsure of your experience...

ME? two-plus years RVN Infantry, have scars and free license plates to prove it.

And I probably was a bit out there when I returned to the world.
Some would ask about the DEER HUNTER and Russian roulette!!!
Allegory was alien to them, college grads too!

My favorite uncle spent WWII with the Rainbow as an Infantryman.

He hired me when I returned to the world and I worked for him for some years. Most of the people I worked with were Veterans, and they were kind to me.
In a dark stairway, a coworker surprised me, I went for his throat... I’m severely hearing impaired and easily startled.
No cops, no big deal. Forever after he would shout, Gurnt it’s me! In later years working for big oil (BP), it would have been, cops, arrest and terminated on the spot.

When my favorite uncle and I discussed military life, it was mostly on the light side.
But there was a very dark side to his past with the Rainbow.

He would often wake up screaming some nights. I had stayed at his house and heard him.
Once and only once, he said at the very end of the war he was in “one of the camps” and “wished he had never been there and had never looked”.
Then he said in a quiet tone,”Dachau”.
I’ve had severe hearing loss since RVN and did not understand the word.

Many years later when he passed his daughter asked if I would go through his Army “stuff” with her.

A Rainbow map of the units hump through Europe.
Near the end is Dachau and I realized what he said many years before.
My aunt said she never knew and his lifelong army buddies never mentioned it.

Some very dark doings by the great men of the Rainbow at Dachau. Not good, not bad but damaged the good men of the Rainbow.

Most men can not jump from the seventh circle of hell to the world and not be affected.

That said, I was a VA inpatient just after RVN.
My view of the VA at that time, it was a social event for many of the old guys, good men all.

Yes, they need to trim the benefits, slowly. But even today it is supposed to be service-connected?

I met a guy at the VA a few years ago, with major damage. I asked, Iraq? He said he had been there but was home on the family farm and the tractor rolled on him! He is one of mine and needed help.

And a very few that upset me. One was the coach of the champion American Legion softball team, drunk, and fell on an Army sidewalk. He collects 50% disability, he said he could have had a higher percent, but they require an annual physical and would drop him.
