My Ringside Seat on a Crooked New Jersey Election

Watching the shenanigans in the still contested New Jersey gubernatorial election, I have to wonder whether there has ever been a truly honest election in state history. From my own experience, I would say probably not and, as I also learned, there are a thousand ways to cheat.

In 1982, through an odd sequence of events, I found myself with a ringside seat on a routinely crooked Newark mayoral election. I had been offered a job as “associate director” of the 1,000-employee Newark Housing and Redevelopment Authority. This being a recession year, and I needing to finish my Ph.D. dissertation, I took it. This was not a career move.

I had two qualifications that endeared me to the Philippine-born woman who ran the show: I lived in Newark public housing growing up, and I aced her borderline illegal IQ test. An elitist whose role model was the then little known Imelda Marcos, my “Imelda” took me under her wing.

I put “associate director” in quotes because I was actually the shadow associate director. Imelda hired me to intimidate the real associate director, a political enemy that Imelda and her boss – Judge Milton Buck, a Black politico -- could not fire. This was the only time in my life I kept a journal. My notes from day two on the job:

Met late in the day with Imelda. Very candid about self. Style “combative,” learned in trenches. Very smart. Needs to talk about it. Met Judge. Discussed role. Purposely keeping me in dark to confuse opposition, keep them on their toes.

Welcome to Newark, the gateway to Third World living. In a way, my timing was excellent. I arrived in January just in time to witness the mayoral campaign. Ignoring all election laws,

In Joisey? Home to the Sopranos? Even in my little town many elections were smelly. I was young at the time but there was “talk”.

As a native Bawstonian, and an aspiring writah of dialects ....

The Bawstin "r" is an "ah", thus we drive cahs.

In New Jehsey, they don't say "joi .. ", but rathah, "jeh(r)" with a nasality that tricks lazy ears to hehring "Joisey"

Spelling Bawstin corrects the imitatah frum say Bahstin", which too often is the case.

Government is corrupt as all. The only solution is small government

I worked at the City Hall of a 1,000,000 plus population City, the summer between first and second year University.

For years my younger cousin could not land a lifeguard job at a kiddie splashpad.
One day, a staffer passed me in a hall way. Hey Steve, do you have a relative named Xxxx. (Me) Why yes, Xxxx is my cousin.

A week later my cousin has the best day of his young life.

My younger cousin landed a lifeguard job at the City pool frequented by young teenage girls.......

Having worked in Newark in that era I can attest it is probably an understatement of what went on in that hell hole. Part of my work was liaison with the city offices and PD.

One thing positive that can be said for the former mayor, Addonizio, he was a Silver star awardee and WWII vet.

No doubt this goes on in many states, Federal offices. Write the check for job security.

As years go by, I no longer believe in honest elections. Dems hold out on election day until they see how many fake ballots they need to win.

If you dare question an election, you are terrorized by local and national news, DOJ visit, FBI visit, etc. Unions donate hundreds of millions of dollars to Dems. That money should go back to Union workers for wage increases, benefits, etc. Top Union leaders earn 6 and 7 figure pensions for life and so easy for them to decide to shut down a company who offers 2.00/hr raise vs. 3.00/hr that Union wants. They would rather everyone lose their job then not get that extra money.

Repubs get prosecuted for campaign violations of the smallest amounts while Dems sail on with a blind eye for their violations.

Then we have the faithful news media doing the daily work for the Dems. Given words, phrases, to use. They don’t report negative stories about the Dems.
