What do Greta and her ilk hope to achieve, that’s what I wonder? Do they really want to persuade people to their point of view, or do they just want to have temper tantrums in public? And then supposedly we are supposed to be shocked and awed by those tantrums?

Well, she is a spoiled brat. The tantrums are part of that. She expects people to change their lives simply because she delivered an angry speech. When people ignore her for youth and inexperience, she becomes all the more angry.
