I've been hearing this nonsense since I first read The Hungry Planet over 40 years ago. This book predicted widespread famines by the 1980s. Paul Erlich made similar predictions of economic dislocations caused by shortages of petroleum, ores, and minerals.
None of these things came to pass because the expert class have universally proven to be false prophets.
