She thought of the 40 acres Ed had bought two years ago outside Colorado Springs — “for retirement” — which had an unfinished house and … not much else. She booked a ticket out west anyway.
A year and a half later, it turns out life on the Colorado Prairie isn’t quite the vacation they anticipated. “It’s brutal!” said Kate.
The couple — along with their friend, musician Mary Ann Ivan, who has spent much of the pandemic with them — immediately got to work transforming the barren property into a home. Ed, 55, designed a garage and finally put down floors in the house.
Ed and Mary Ann planted trees (half of which died), dug out a pond (involving a backhoe almost tipping over and “their lives flashing before their eyes”) and built a vegetable garden while braving 60-miles-per-hour winds, dust storms, hail and more.
“We’re on version 14 of the garden hutch,” said Ivan, 56, adding that the harsh winds kept destroying their plants. “One day it was going to hail, so we got a clothesline and we were putting the clothesline through the grommets and trying to tie down the tarp so the plants wouldn’t be killed. … It looked like we were on a sailboat trying to get the sail down in the midst of a hurricane!”
Meanwhile, Kate, who has had steady remote work as a life coach, takes care of the brood’s two dogs, cats and seven chickens — down from 11.
“Chickens are surprisingly cuddly,” she said of her new pets. But prairie life has been hard for those creatures as well. “My favorite chicken, Squiggles, became a prairie snack for some kind of bird of prey.”

New York libtards move to rural Colorado.
I can just hear the locals now: “You bought the Haney Place?”
tl;dr
Have to give them New Yorkers credit though. At least they’re smart enough to get the hell out of that rat hole called New York City. And I read the article. It seems most of them learned from their early mistakes and managed to make do with what they had. Good for them.
really? no doubt still voting dem
OMG! LMFAO!
Spit my coffee! That’s funny!
“You bought the Haney Place?”
I get that sort of remark for the house I just bought. “You bought Don’s place? I didn’t know he was selling.”
They won’t last.
I agree with you — you have to hand it to them struggling through those challenges. It reminds me of something I read a couple days ago: “Enthusism is common. Endurance is rare.” ~ Angela Duckworth.
It also brings to mind my gr-gr-grandfather and family moving from a comfortable place in Ontario to the wild prairies of Saskatchewan in the 1860s when there was NOTHING on the prairie. They lived nine years in a sod house before they could build a wood frame house. I’m sure the couple in Colorado Springs has it easy compared to life on the prairie in a sod house with a dirt floor.
A farm is a money pit that will rival any boat on the water.
And you don’t have to be a drooling idiot to lose money. Here in Virginia, I see many a successful business person retire, sink money into a farm and then have to go back to work to make more money to keep the farm running.
Men who went the distance with farms usually had a wife who had a government job, and it really helped if he had a cushy gig, too.
I agree. The ones who decided to move the kitchen only to find they had to move plumbing was kind of weird though. More likely a New York “journalist” level of idiocy.
From the photo’s, it looks like they’ve got a good handle on their new life.
Before painting don’t forget to flip the pore switch.
All the best places were taken a long time ago.
Everyone from the city should read this and run back to their apartments. And no one mentioned that EVERYONE HAS GUNS, and big ones, too.
We need to buy an island, preferably surrounded by huge, hungry sharks, where we can relocate refugees from California and the east coast. They can create their own little socialist sh*t hole, tax each other into oblivion, and celebrate every perversion satan ever imagined. The main thing is that they should never be allowed to vote or handle sharp instruments!
You can See why city dwellers vote socialist democrat. They want the government to do all the hard work...so they can go to shows, shopping and eat out and expound how the gov. is to spend other peoples money. These inexperienced green folk will spend the rest of their lives learning how to survive...then they die saying...oh...now I understand..
P.S. remember John Denver’s song...”Guess he’d rather be in Colorado”...? Ain’t so easy is it?... greenies...

these people should not ever be in charge of any other living things
Maybe a nice prank for the New York and California transplants is to dress up as a door-to-door gun salesman and try to sell them some AR-15s, etc. “Welcome to Colorado! Everyone needs at least two or three of these around here.”
