Christopher Steele’s primary source is Igor Danchenko, who collected info from what he first claimed was a “network of subsources” in Russia.

Danchenko was not a high-level Russian in Moscow. From 2005-2010, he worked at the Brookings Institution, a center-left think tank and was introduced to a Clinton crony who The NYT confirmed is Charles Dolan.
Dolan has long been in Clinton circles, serving seven years as head of the Democratic Governors Assoc and state chairman of Bill Clinton’s 1992 and 1996 presidential campaigns. Clinton appointed him to a State Department advisory commission, and the indictment notes he was an active “volunteer” on Hillary’s 2016 campaign.
He also had far more ties to Russians than anyone in Trump’s circle, having handled “global PR for the Russian government” for eight years and interacted frequently with senior Russian officials and Embassy staff.
The indictment reveals that in August 2016, Danchenko asked Dolan for any “thought, rumor, allegation” regarding the resignation of Paul Manafort as Trump’s campaign manager. Danchenko explained he was working on a “project against Trump.”
Dolan was connected to other people and events that appear in the dossier. He traveled to Moscow in June 2016 to plan a conference staying at the site of the dossier’s ugliest accusation against Trump, involves disgusting sexual acts, set in the Ritz-Carlton’s presidential suite and mentions the hotel manager and staff. Danchenko met with Dolan at the hotel on that trip. He flew thennto London to provide info to Steele for his dossier.
The indictment flags meetings, e-mails and calls that suggests Dolan passed plenty of other info to Danchenko....... information he might have obtained during visits to the Russian Embassy in Washington. (Did the Russians know where this was going?)
