New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern welcomed signs from the United States of a bigger engagement in the Indo-Pacific region, saying in an interview that her government has "mature" ties with China that allow for disagreement.
Ardern will host an online summit next week of leaders from the Asia-Pacific, including the United States, China and Japan, to discuss how the region can recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing economic crisis.
In the interview to air on Sunday on the U.S. network NBC, Ardern said that under President Joe Biden, the United States has "an incredibly important role" to play in strategic defence, economy and trade ties in the region.
"We welcome that physical presence, being part of important talks in our region," she told the "Meet the Press" programme. "And we have seen, we have seen that greater ... engagement in recent times."
Ardern reiterated her government's position that New Zealand - which has major trade ties to China and has long been touted by Beijing as a model of its relations with Western countries - will pursue a policy of "integrity" with China.

And, honestly, after the botched withdrawal from AFG, I really can't blame anybody for wanting to hedge their bets. The Alzheimer's victim has proven that the US is not a reliable ally to anybody.
Wait until China goes to war for Taiwan.....Does New Zelaand foolishly believe they won’t be a target down the line....fools they are.
Do you think that Biden / Milley would defend them? Or, worse, that they wouldn't cower in fear after making a commitment?
New Zealands playing both sides of the fence...China for sure but they also recognized Australia recently lining up with the US and Japan’s agreement because of China’s warmongering tactics. Now they’re scared they’ll miss that boat.
Try and by a property in New Zealand and a dump will run you over a million. Very expensive housing there.
NZ said no US nuclear vessels can port on their shores. Hope the Maori’s have enough machetes to stop the Chinese.
Honestly, any time before August of 2021, I'd agree with you. But now?
Could you honestly be sure that the Biden Regime or the woke "military" that is left after all the purges would even be capable of defending NZ, much less the order being given to do so?
I can't. Not any more. The US military circa 2021 is not the same as the US military, circa 2003. Or the US military, circa 1990.
That’s been their policy since 1985.

I understand that. I also understand that there have been exceptions (most recently in 2012 and 2016).
I also understand that they have opted out of the recent AUKUS treaty.
But, again, prior to 8/2021, I would agree with you...
NZ = NPCs
Green stone (Jade)... the Maoris didnt have metal/iron weapons..
They used green stone for their spear tips and other weapons and tools...
